This case study examined how a landscape ecology approach could better shape scenario development for a SLEUTH (slope, land use, exclusion, urban, transportation, and hillshade) model application toward achieving possibly more ecologically sustainable scenarios and, therefore, future landscapes. Our methodology relied on two main steps––developing landscape-ecology-led growth scenarios and using SLEUTH to model their impacts on urban growth and land-use change. As a case study, we applied the model to Sariyer, Istanbul, for the year 2045, where transportation infrastructure changes portend significant implications for the future landscape. Even though there are many works on urban growth in the international literature, there has been only limited investigation of the effects of urban transportation systems in developing nations and their implications for urban landscapes. This study’s novelty lies in including a landscape ecology approach in the scenario development to enable better integration with modeling and the use of landscape metrics to modify the scenarios and interpret the model outcomes. Our research question is: can a joint approach of scenario development using landscape ecology principles (associated with landscape metrics) and SLEUTH modeling accurately forecast the impacts of landscape ecology and ecosystem services on human and urban systems? We conclude that a landscape ecology approach does help illuminate future urban-growth behavior led by transportation system development. Landscape ecology can be a medium through which the SLEUTH model can articulate more comprehensive ecological planning related to the implications of different
growth scenarios.

Obviously, cities have been blended with nature for centuries; the only difference now is that industrialization has made food production invisible. Istanbul is presented as the case study. Through the rich history of Istanbul, food has a strong influence on city's image. It is still possible to see the traces of agricultural uses along the Theodesian Walls, and some old neighborhoods. Some foresighted organizations and individuals promote agriculture in inner urban areas. However, dealing with rapid urbanization problems, agricultural lands have been transformed into settlement areas in time. As we are in the age of sustainability, combining agriculture with the new technology and recent architectural trends as well as sustainable master plans incorporating productive landscape concepts will encourage urban agriculture in the city, hence creating more resilient urban environments.

It is an important subject to improve sustainability of cities, urban landscapes, and agrarian society. Establishing the urban-rural linkages is a critical endeavor for the quality of life in urban areas. The present work elaborates the historical evolution of urban agriculture in the world. The review of different urban agriculture cases through literature and internet searches highlighted the effects of different eras on urban agriculture. The final outcome is presented in the form of a chronological diagram of urban agriculture.
The findings show that through the history agriculture has played a big role in development of cities. It was the war, crises, and famine that contributed agriculture to rise in urban areas as a vital solution. The shortages and scarcity that came after the wars, created the ‘back to the land’ vision. Subsequently, the awareness influenced the lifestyle in every dimension, from political to architecture, and to landscape. Food, as one of the primary material of humans’ lifecycle, was eventually recognized by communities and governments due to the emerging concept of sustainability.

Establishing the urban-rural linkages is a critical endeavor for the quality of life in urban areas.
The purpose of this thesis is to present the historical evolution of different urban agriculture concepts; and to elaborate their design criteria. In addition, it develops a chronological diagram, which shows urban agriculture thresholds through history.
The review of different urban agriculture cases through literature and internet searches highlighted the effects of different eras (eg. World Wars, Industrial Revolution etc.) on urban agriculture. The cases are exclusively analyzed for their size, location, ownership, benefits, and functions in order to define general principles of allotment gardens, community gardens, and city farms. Institutional environment with regards to urban agriculture in Turkey is also analyzed in three sections: public institutions, laws and legislations, NGOs. A
The final outcome is presented in the form of a chronological diagram and a design criteria table of urban agriculture. The findings show that through the history agriculture has played a big role in development of cities. It was the war, crises, and famine through all over the world that contributed agriculture to rise in urban areas as a vital solution. However, the notion has changed its characteristics from being an implicit concept in utopian cities of preindustrial and post war eras to being more exclusive planning and design strategy of the age of sustainability. Despite having many concepts and institutions within the frame of agriculture and environment in Turkey, it is clear that there is elusiveness of authorities in the field of urban agriculture.
Recommendations include; 1- Increasing collaboration between governmental, non-governmental bodies, and individuals, 2- Composing an Urban Agriculture Commission of residents and a city representative, 3- Generating financial support to producers, 4- Raising awareness of how UA contributes to the city‟s sustainability, 5- Adapting Urban Agriculture Concepts in City Plan and Policy, 6- Conducting a comprehensive review of policy and zoning regulations, 7-Providing access to UA areas, 8-Exploring the possibilities of utilizing degraded and derelict land for urban agriculture, 9-Adapting Permaculture techniques in urban life, and 10-Explore possibilities of urban agriculture on structures.

natural processes. This natural port was shaped through its rivers and native flora that emerged with the climate and topography
of its ancient habitation; it established a gravitational point where historical, archaeological, ecological, industrial, cultural and
architectural layers are intertwined by creating a microcosm that reconciles people, water, nature, goods, and stories in a
multitude of scales ranging from local to global. However, 20th century urban zoning decisions and industrialization of this
ancient port not only caused water contamination that deteriorated its environmental landscape and its natural habitat, but also
created a coastal urban fabric disconnected from its fundamental originator: 'water'. This study is a presentation of a research
project which was awarded in the Haliç Shoreline Urban Design Competition in 2020. The research regards the site as a peerless
artifact and aims to devise an adaptable urban framework inclusively transforming and evolving with the city in symbiosis with
Haliç waters.
Method of this study relies on research by design while the main structure of the investigation was conducted through a detailed
scrutinization of gravures, ancient drawings, paintings, maps, reviews of related literature, travel books, narrations such as
poems, tales, and legends. Urban and regional approaches and analysis were researched through a cartographic mapping process
to discover and unfold the complex relationships of water and the city, whereas, infographics and collages inspired from historic
miniatures were also employed to empower and converse Haliç’s legacy of water for future formations.
Unearthing the neglected urban morphology of this Byzantine later Ottoman port city, the research investigates and proposes
possible scenarios formed on/around Haliç that foster the connection of the land and water; enhance the conversation between
natural and human spheres; attempt to recover and recuperate its water ecologies; and probe the impact of climate change as
well as the water level change at the intersection of socio-ecological, socio-cultural, socio-political and socio-spatial encounters
of the 21st century.

artifact and aims to devise an adaptable urban framework inclusively transforming and evolving with the city in symbiosis with
Haliç waters.
Unearthing the neglected urban morphology of this Byzantine later Ottoman port city, the research investigates and proposes
possible scenarios formed on/around Haliç that foster the connection of the land and water; enhance the conversation between
natural and human spheres; attempt to recover and recuperate its water ecologies; and probe the impact of climate change as
well as the water level change at the intersection of socio-ecological, socio-cultural, socio-political and socio-spatial encounters
of the 21st century.
last five decades. While new functions, new forms of land usage and increased infrastructure dominate and trigger this change, places with
rich histories have become more fragile than ever before. Within contemporary urban life, historic landscapes and associated land usage gain
priority of their power to define and contribute to the sustainability of
green infrastructure.
This research analyzes the green heritage of Istanbul to gain a better
understanding of its potential to contribute to the development of the
The European side of Istanbul. Accordingly, three relevant typologies: historical parks and gardens, groves and cemeteries are analyzed to reveal the
different themes and contexts they represent.
The research results show that historical landscapes can be managed
through a systematic approach that underlies the integration of those
landscapes into the surrounding environment by evaluating those places as a part of the green infrastructure of the city. These findings suggest
that conservation strategies are an effective tool to control the change
within those landscapes and should be re-considered, from the perspective of contemporary design approaches, to create a robust framework
for the development of an integrated green infrastructure

The findings show that through the history agriculture has played a big role in development of cities. It was the war, crises, and famine that contributed agriculture to rise in urban areas as a vital solution. The shortages and scarcity that came after the wars, created the ‘back to the land’ vision. Subsequently, the awareness influenced the lifestyle in every dimension, from political to architecture, and to landscape. Food, as one of the primary material of humans’ lifecycle, was eventually recognized by communities and governments due to the emerging concept of sustainability.
However, 20th century urban zoning decisions and industrialization of this

created a coastal urban fabric disconnected from its fundamental originator: 'water'. This study is a presentation of a research
