Frugal Innovations have captured the attention of both press and academics in recent times. While frugality has always been advocated, the term ‘Frugal Innovation’ has become a buzzword only a few years back. It is also juxtaposed with a host of other terms like ‘Jugaad’, ‘Inclusive Innovation’ and so on. This review studies the origin and evolution of Frugal Innovation, its relation to other innovations, and the factors which have led to the prominence of such innovations in recent times. A review of theories in extant literature is also done with regard to gaining policy insights and then creating a favourable ecosystem so that frugal innovations can flourish everywhere. A section is devoted to studying frugal innovations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, some gaps in research are identified and future research directions are suggested.
