Elena Fava is adjunct professor at the IUAV University of Venice. She has a PhD in Art History and collaborates with the CSAC of the University of Parma. Her research focuses on the archive, the phenomenon of Made in Italy and the relationship between fashion and the culture of design, in particular the Radical and post-Radical experiences, and Cinzia Ruggeri. She has presented communications on these topics at national and international meetings. She has also published contributions in academic journals, essays in collective volumes and the monograph Vestire contro.

The aim of the contribution is to depict the composite panorama of 1980s Italy as a lively laboratory, a sort of harbinger of the successful “Made in Italy” label. Art as an essential starting point for fashion design and experimentation on clothing, and as a stage of research extended to an environmental scale, declined in a sentimental way of living the space: these words describe the journey of Cinzia Ruggeri, the artist and designer that in the 1980s was crowned as the “archi-stilista” and “art-stilista” of the Milanese pret-a-porter.

For me, fashion is industrial […] It was the biggest revolution in fashion, making looks from couture on a large scale. And remember, Italy was the country to open up to mass production in luxury: it’s in our culture". The analysis of visual sources found in public and private archives, together with the testimony of Magli and the examination of published material form the methodological framework of the research. The contribution wants to reflect on the meaning of the collaboration between Ruggeri and Magli considering it as an active way of contributing to the political debate connected to 1970s Italian feminism: a movement necessarily related to fashion, whose mutual relationship is to be highlighted to better read the historical moment and the different cultural phenomenologies it generated.
