This complex of 140 species includes large trees, dichotomous trees, shrubs and the extraordinary giant caulescent rosettes, considered as a classic example of adaptation in tropical high-elevation ecosystems. The subtribe has also long been recognized as a prominent case of adaptive radiation, but the understanding of its evolution has been hampered by a lack of phylogenetic resolution. Herein, we produce the first fully resolved phylogeny of all morphological groups of Espeletiinae, using whole plastomes and about a million nuclear nucleotides obtained with an original de novo assembly procedure without reference genome, and analyzed with traditional and coalescent-based approaches that consider the possible impact of incomplete lineage sorting and hybridization on phylogenetic inference. Bioassay-guided separation of a Xylopia aromatica leaf extract led to the isolation of two labdane diterpenoids whose structures were identified by 1 H, 13C NMR spectroscopy as 8(17),12E,14-labdatrien-18-oic acid (1) and 15,16-dihydroxy-8(17),13(E)-labdadien-19-oic acid (2), These diterpenoids were tested for their cytotoxic effect against the human HT29 and MDA-MB-231, and mouse 4T1 cancer cell lines. Using a 48h sulphorhodamine B assay, compounds 1 and 2 exhibited relatively low GI50 (growth inhibition) values of 9.4 and 7.5 µg/mL respectively, compared to 7.1 µg/mL for cisplatin. The anti-inflammatory effects of the compounds were tested in terms of their ability to inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production by LPS-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages over 24h. These compounds also inhibited NO production at lower concentrations (IC50 values: 1 – 13.5 µg/mL, 2 – 12.3 ug/mL, aminoguanidine [control] – 10.5 µg/mL), but without showing an important cytotoxic effect (IC50 > 200 ug/mL) using the (3-(4,5-dimetiltiazol-2yl) -5- (3-carboximetoxifenil) -2(4-sulfofenil) -2 H-tetrazolium) (MTS) cytotoxicity assay. From the inactive fractions six known compounds were isolated: quercitrin, quercetin 3,3' dirhamnose, liriodenine, lysicamine, xylopianin and annomontacin.

In recent decades, the sector Grano de Oro in the terminal stretch of the river Palmar was altered by deforestation of the deciduous forests for cattle ranching, transforming it into uncultivated land and seasonal pastures. Subsequently, the land was modulated and flooded to improve the availability of fresh grass. However, the plots were invaded by aquatic plants competing with planted grasses and attracting many other species such as waterfowl, so the diversity of aquatic species began to increase. In order to document this process of change, a spatiotemporal study of the land use between the years 1986 and 2004 was undertaken, using remote sensors of the area. Additionally, a study of the aquatic plant communities between 2004 and 2008 was performed, through nine samples (of 10 sub-samples of 1 m2 each). The results show significant reductions in the forest vegetation cover, which was replaced by shrubs and bare soil. The numbers of aquatic plants was similar (about 45 species) in both samples, changing only the composition of species. Currently, to prevent colonization of invasive species, modules are being leveled and a drip system is being implemented so that the diversity of aquatic organisms is expected to fall again.
Seasonally dry tropical forests are distributed across Latin America and the Caribbean and are hi... more Seasonally dry tropical forests are distributed across Latin America and the Caribbean and are highly threatened, with less than 10% of their original extent remaining in many countries. Using 835 inventories covering 4660 species of woody plants, we show marked floristic turnover among inventories and regions, which may be higher than in other neotropical biomes, such as savanna. Such high floristic turnover indicates that numerous conservation areas across many countries will be needed to protect the full diversity of tropical dry forests. Our results provide a scientific framework within which national decision-makers can contextualize the floristic significance of their dry forest at a regional and continental scale.

ABSTRACT Solanum sisymbriifolium y S. campechiense, both belonging to subgenus Leptostemonum section Cryptocarpum (Solanaceae), are reported as new records for Venezuela. Subgenus Leptostemonum, of wide geographical distribution, includes 300-450 spiny species of herbs, subshrubs, shrubs and trees, with stellate hairs and with anthers which taper distally and open by terminal pores. Des crip-tions, illustrations, habitats, geographic distributions and an identification key are given, based on morphological studies on specimens in herbaria CORO, IVIC, MY, QCA and QCNE. Observations on section Cryptocarpum and its importance are also included.
