At the beginning, I consider the effect that remuneration received by the therapist directly from the customer can have on their therapeutic relationship. Then I discuss the issues related to the compensation for psychotherapy services and show the consequences which the criteria of compensating for specific therapeutic methods have for the quality of psychotherapeutic relationships, as well as the influence which the requirement to study the effectiveness of psychotherapy in the natural science paradigm has on psychotherapeutic services. The arguments I put forward lead to the conclusion that the criteria of the compensation for psychotherapeutic services can change the psychotherapeutic relationship into a business relationship and, as a result, the therapist can start to treat the customer instrumentally.

The first part of the article presents Karl Jaspers’ thoughts on the psychotherapist assuming a philosopher’s role in a therapeutic relationship. The therapist-philosopher has a certain worldview which influences the process of therapy, as well as the client’s opinions. In Tjeltveit’s conception, described later in the article, the psychotherapist is considered an ethicist. Understood thus, the role of therapist emerges particularly in the following situations: reflection on the ethical questions of psychotherapy, the situation in which an ethical worldview that influences relationships with others is adopted, and when the therapist impacts the opinions and views of other people, especially clients. Introduced concepts are used by the authors to present a view on the cognitive-behavioural psychotherapist as philosopher/ethicist.

We provide a critique of their argumentation and defend the opposite thesis: MAC is potentially morally worse than the three other options.

Autorki przedstawiają rozumienie postulatu zachowania przez psychoterapeutę neutralności światopoglądowej w perspektywie historycznej i współczesnej, ujętej w ramy kodeksów etycznych różnych stowarzyszeń terapeutów. Przedstawiają wyniki badań dotyczących przekonań i systemu wartości terapeutów. Przedstawiają różne stanowiska dotyczące postępowania terapeuty w sytuacji widocznych różnic pomiędzy systemami wartości ich samych i pacjentów.
Summary
In current discussions on ethical issues in psychotherapy, it is generally acknowledged that it is not possible that psychotherapist’s value system does not influence the process of therapy and the professional relationship. The authors ask the following questions: how do therapists understand the standard of neutrality? What are the values identified by the therapists? How does the therapist’s value system influence that of the client? How can the therapist involve his/her value system in order to achieve an improvement in therapy? What should the therapist do, when his/her value system differs from the client’s? When does the therapist cross the ethical boundaries, trying to influence and change the value system of the client? Who is the guardian of the client’s right to his/her value system not being undermined? The authors attempt to answer these questions analysing the literature concerning the ethical aspects of psychotherapy and several codes of ethics and conduct of the selected psychotherapists’ associations.
