We present the 9th issue of Colloquia Humanistica, whose content is entirely coherent and focused on a single theme: cross-cultural encounters which, whether they occurred as clashes or exchanges, affected everyone involved. Our goal was for all the texts – from the main articles to materials, sources, archival research, and even reviews and discussions – to be in line with the issue’s title. Initially, the title’s “encounters” were supposed to apply to Jewish/non-Jewish relations in a specific area, but the present volume, which is a compilation of the perspectives and interests of many different authors, reveals a more multidimensional meaning of the word.

New York and London: Rutledge Taylor & Francis Group The book My Father’s Wars by Alisse Waterston is a structural expression of the need for a new anthropological orientation in history. Waterston chooses to gradually weave the narrative through the methodological directions of intimate ethnography. More precisely, it is a story about the importance of the relationship between micro-history and the fluidity of historical particularisms, between the relations of matrixes of power and reflections on anthropocultural systems of the higher kind. It is here that the value of the complex focalization point in the work is accommodated; it lies in the question in what grammatical person to tell an individual story (which at the same time leaves a strong seal the identity of the descendants) embedded in Jewish cultural history as part of the lar...

The first one is: How does one reach Zion (understood as a mnemotope) in the absence of a political identity of the Sephardim of Monastir (Bitola) within the framework of the Ottoman millet system? The second question is: How is the theo-messianic desire for Zion (understood as a vertical history) possible and accomplishable in the linearity of history, in the context of existing political chronotopes, or so-called ChristianOrthodox nationalisms in Ottoman Macedonia? In this complex historical period, the image of Zion does not have a real political place, but it still remains to emanate significant meaning about the homeland as a spiritual space.

Yet, it seems that the literary history and the Macedonian literature produced after the Shoah, complement the empty place of the history itself. The literary counterparts of the historical victims and the literary stylization of the speech of the impossible witness, left with any possibility for the anticipation in the future – represent the central focus of this paper. Following the cross-methodological approach between the literary fiction and archival faction, this article illustrates the historical literary bond by way of few representative examples from the modern Macedonian literature, with the accent on the short story “Even the dead burn from the lightning’s in front of them” by Slavko Janevski.

The first one is the famous XXth century film director Louis Bunuel and the second figure is Simeon the Stylite (Simeon Stolpnik), ascetic from the VIth century, who spent almost 40 years of his life living on a pillar. Taking into account the differences in their work and life, I interrogate their “connection” as an anthropo-semiotic dimension in relation to the question of the eternity of the stone and the hope, about the life and death, strong as the stone and unreachable as the hope. The second important question in my text becomes the dialectical play between the stone and hope, which in reality becomes a play of humor and paradox, absurd about - what would be the final (and strong as the stone) and what would be eternal (if we assume that would be the hope)?

How can archives speak on behalf of “lost voices?” Dr. Sofija Grandakovska will address the anthropology of genocide, focusing her talk on the destruction of a peripheral community on the borders of Europe: Macedonian Jews.
