Emrah Altindis
Dr. Emrah Altindis is currently working as a post-doctoral research fellow in Ronald Kahn's lab at the Joslin Diabetes Center/Harvard Medical School. His research is focused on four different subjects in Kahn Laboratory: (i) functional characterization of novel insulin/IGF-1 like molecules, (ii) determining potential role of gut microbiome on onset of Type 1 Diabetes autoimmunity, (iii) understanding the effects of gut microbiome on host intestinal proteome and (iv) identification of tissue specific exosomal proteins. Dr. Altindis received his B.S. degree in Ege University (Izmir, Turkey) and did an M.Sc. at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) where he conducted the first immunoproteomics study of B. pertussis. He then moved to Italy to work at Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics and to start his PhD at Bologna University. During his PhD, he developed a novel in-silico vaccine discovery tool (called Protectome) and identified new vaccine candidates for two very important human pathogens, S. agalactiae and S. aureus. In August 2011, he came to Harvard Medical School for postdoctoral training under the direction of Dr. John Mekalanos, former Chair of the Microbiology and Immunobiology Department and one of the leading scientists in the fields of bacterial pathogenesis and functional genomics. During this first postdoc training period, Dr. Altindis published two research papers on functional and proteomics characterization of outer membrane vesicles and identification of new virulence factors of Vibrio cholerae. During the last year in the Mekalanos Lab, Dr. Altindis started to become more interested in diabetes and in particular, its relation to microbes and started a second post-doc in my Kahn laboratory at Joslin Diabetes Center in September 2014. Since joining Joslin, he was awarded the Mary K. Iacocca Postdoctoral Fellowship, one of the most prestigious awards at Joslin given to a senior fellow showing outstanding promise.
