    ABSTRACTMeasuring students’ English ability in most universities would be counted from their passing grade on the Test of English as A Foreign Language (TOEFL). Listening to natives is considered a complicated section to answer among the three sections. Thus, EFL learners should focus on attainment strategies to answer the TOEFL preparation test. The current study examines students’ profile of attainment strategy use and how usage of this strategy differs by gender. The sixth English semester students, faculty of education at Universitas Islam Malang, were required to fill out the questionnaire of strategies used to answer the TOEFL. Utilizing the descriptive and independent t-test, the findings reveal that students deployed the strategies at a moderate level. Further, female students used all the strategies more often and significantly differently than their counterparts.     : The current study investigated some problems on :  1) the frequency use of learning strategy categories in listening deployed by university students, and 2) the distinguished use of the learning strategies by the high and low achiever university students. There were 140 second semester students and were majoring at English Education Department of Universitas Islam Malang. The students were required to answer the 85 strategy items provided in the Posteriori Taxonomy of Strategies of Learning English Listening Skill (Zuhairi & Hidayanti, 2014) . Besides, the students’ listening scores were compared in purpose to know the significant difference on the use of the learning strategies between the two groups . The finding revealed that the use of strategies were at moderate level.     The current study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using strategy-based instruction on the student’s listening achievement. This research applied quasi-experimental design, and the instruments were pretest and posttest. Both tests were about putting the pictures in order and form completion.  Prior to strategy choice, this study utilized Posteriori Taxonomy of Strategies of Learning English Listening Skill (Zuhairi & Hidayanti, 2014) especially focusing on the use of eight strategy categories deployed by successful students (Hidayanti & Umamah, 2018). Gaining the result from Independent t-Test analysis, it was found out that the experimental group outperformed better than their counterparts in control group. Thus, Strategy-based instruction plays important role to enhance and improve the EFL learners’ listening skill.

    This descriptive qualitative research attempts to examine students’ attitude towards the implementation of debate activity in writing class and the implementation of ‘semi’ sit-in writing exam. In this study, the researchers used the term ‘semi’ sit-it exam to describe a condition when students have to develop the accepted writing outline into an argumentative essay in the exam day. Before writing the outline, students do debate activity to generating ideas as well as understanding the concept of argumentative essay through speaking activity. As many as 51 students of English Department, University of Islam Malang participated in this study. The data was collected through interview, and the obtained was analyzed and classified based on similar points.     Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengatahui adakah pengaruh pengajaran berbasis-strategi pada kemajuan mahasiswa dalam ketrampilan mendengarkan. Adapun strategi yang dipakai meliputi strategi Resources-processing, Compensation dan Input-output Processing yang diambil dari Posteriori Taxonomy of Strategies of Learning English Listening Skill . Desain penelitian adalah jenis kuasi-eksperimen. Sebelum menentukan kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol, kedua kelompok diberi pretes untuk mengetahui kemampuan awal mahasiswa. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kedua kelompok mempunyai kemampuan awal yang tidak berbeda. Selanjutnya, kelompok eksperimen diberi pengajaran berbasis-strategi (tiga strategi), dan kelompok kontrol diberi pengajaran metode dan instruksi tradisional.     This study aims at investigating the effect of the process approach on student writing anxiety and performance. Teachers should find ways to cope with anxiety as it is known as the negative predictor of students’ writing performance. Fifteen students participated in this study. They were assigned to write an argumentative essay under the topic ‘should national exam be banned?”. The treatment was given following the writing stages, from outlining to publishing. SLWAI questionnaire was distributed before and after the treatment to measure the effectiveness of the process approach on students’ anxiety. The findings indicated that students writing anxiety decreases from 71.27 to 63.20, which means that the anxiety level goes down from high to moderate anxiety.     The recent study is investigating 1) the significant difference on the use of learning strategy by male and female students in listening, and 2) the correlation between the learning strategy use and two aspects of gender and listening proficiency. The questionnaire was directed to 140 university students to answer a-85 item of learning strategy. The t-test and correlation analysis were used to analyse the research problems. The first finding reveals that female students did not deploy the strategies significantly different from the male counterparts.     The present study addresses three objectives: 1) identifying the intensity of strategies use in learning listening, 2) investigating the inter-correlation among the strategies deployment, and 3) describing how significantly successful and less successful learners differ in the use of strategies. The accessible subjects were two hundred and fifty seven students at seventh and eighth grade of junior high school in Malang, Indonesia. They were required to complete 50 items strategies questionnaire of learning listening taken from Oxford strategy taxonomy. They are memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies.
