This article primarily draws on interviews with (N = 64) street drug dealers including 24 incarcerated ones, and ethnographic work in 3 impoverished neighborhoods in Mexico City. We find that cannabis sellers enter the profession through early biographical experiences that are reinforced throughout adolescence. Dealing in the context of this cannabis culture is not only acceptable in the present but also viewed as inherently part of their future. Further analysis reveals a typology of dealers that tends to be marked by the transition from cannabis specialists to polydrug vendors. As dealers progress to more profitable sales of hard drugs, they tend to lose the trust and support of neighborhood residents who view their suppliers, clients, and associates as dangerous. We conclude with policy interventions uniquely derived from ethnographic research that are intended to minimize the risk of escalating to more serious drug distribution while preserving community stability and cohesion.
Crime and the Life Course in Another America: Collective Trajectory in Mexican Drug Cartel Dominated Communities, 2022

The theoretical areas examined are some of the core aspects of LCT: trajectory; the age-graded process; transitions; state dependence; effects from other institutions (religion, employment, family) on desistance; and, ultimately, why desistance and persistence differ in these Mexican communities compared with LCT expectations. Our results indicate that the weak State and drug trafficking organizations’ dominance create structural conditions in which other institutions such as religion, family, and employment adapt using collectivism found in Mexican culture. Using the concept of collective trajectory (CT) to bridge the differences between our findings and LCT, we highlight how crime during the life course plays out differently in these more collectivistic communities.

Juveniles engage in a wide range of activities from lookouts in drug trafficking operations to high-risk activities, such as kidnapping and homicide. Based on ongoing ethnographic work in Mexico and referrals from correctional officials, we conducted in-depth biographical interviews with convicted and active cartel members (N = 79). Our data revealed that similar biographical experiences in communities characterized by a high degree of collectivism laid the groundwork for their entry and continued participation in criminal activity. Through inductive methods, we introduce a theoretical concept that we term a collective trajectory to help explain our subjects’ pathway and criminal careers in DTOs.

Through interviews and participant observation, we explore the social mechanisms that sustain and facilitate informal drug dealing. Our findings indicate that the sale of illicit products, especially drugs, is a needed supplement to household income that expands and contracts according to economic need. Drug selling is integrated into the context of small licit (front) businesses in which dealers sell small amounts of marijuana and cocaine to trusted clients as a (back) business. These “back businesses” are protected by those who operate them, and family, community members, and corrupt officials who benefit from their existence. Finally, the dealers that we studied occupy a unique niche in the overall structure of drug dealing in the neighborhood by remaining under the radar by not attracting the attention of drug cartels.

Using ethnographic methods, fieldwork, and interviews in several Mexico City neighborhoods, we discuss the activities, strategies, and characteristics of what we designate as low-profile drug dealers. Working as freelancers, they exploit their community connections to operate relatively autonomously. They are socialized to function on a subterranean level of narcotrafficking avoiding the attention of drug trafficking organizations and law enforcement. They manage licit (front businesses) and illicit (back businesses), and tend to be in their late twenties with past experience in riskier criminal pursuits. Because their proceeds from the sale of drugs supplement household income, their activities expand and contract according to financial need.

The case contains chiefly methodological reflections over a half-year postdoctoral ethnographic study, as well as my previous ethnographic projects carried out in the Ecuadorian community of Limoncocha and in Polish juvenile detention centers. I discuss the problem of some of the ethical issues connected with researcher involvement in daily activities with participants. Researcher actions undertaken in a field environment may require considerable effort in adjusting one’s image (auto-presentation work) to an audience’s assumptions and expectations. I also discuss my direct experiences with collecting and analyzing qualitative data to better understand the social conditions and drug-trafficking activities of community members. Data for the case study were collected using in-depth interviews, overt participant observations, and visual data.

Much of the findings suggest that genetic risks are involved in antisocial behavior including criminal behavior with the environment and genes working in a synergistic manner. According to researchers in the field, the continued accumulation of biosocial criminological data and the development of biosocial theories are imperative to the advancement of this perspective. Recently some have argued that biosocial research can move the field of criminology from an exclusively environmental approach to one that emphasizes prevention and addresses crime as a public health problem. However, there is considerable opposition and controversy in mainstream criminology circles to the biosocial approach because it involves, among other things, genotyping offenders for genetic risks to elucidate the etiology of antisocial behavior. Using a recent example from our biosocial research in Poland, we will consider the ethical dimensions of conducting such research on human subjects and explore whether recent findings in biosocial criminology can be integrated into current approaches to crime prevention with minimal harm to subjects.

It mainly discusses some patterns that underlie the process of photography interpretation made by interviewees within the techniques of in-depth interview and focus group interview. To characterize the research tools, contexts and circumstances of research are indicated which are important for the understanding of the outcomes obtained. The results are based on an analysis of forty in-depth interviews and eight focus group interview sessions. As this article is methodological in character, the problem of stigmatization as a subject of social research is only indicated as a context of the analyses presented in this paper.

The author attempts to adapt the psychological concept to the educational activities offered in youth correctional facilities. He defends the idea that an inmate's emotion work, which occurs through the inmate's relations with the personnel, provides the basis for effective resocialization activities. He discusses activities to help boys and girls in correctional facilities develop accepted social mechanisms for managing their negative emotions. The findings presented in the article rest on seven years of qualitative research in resocialization centers of all types throughout Poland. The principle of triangulation in regard to method, researcher, and data was used for the research. For analysis of the empirical material, an interpretative paradigm was used to grasp the interactive nature of emotion work and the emergence of negative emotions.

W badaniach zastosowana została zasada triangulacji w zakresie metod, ba-dacza i danych. Do analizy zebranych materiałów empirycznych wykorzystany został nurt interpretatywny, który daje możliwość uchwycenia interakcyjnego charakteru działań empatycznych.

The goal of study was to evaluate the differences in FA of the internal capsule in EOS-patients and healthy controls and to place emphasis on the sex as a potential factor determining a predominant pathological pattern of described changes. Methods: 30 EOS patients and 30 healthy controls were studied using DTI. FA measures within internal capsules were performed in selected ROIs. For statistical analyses the one-way ANOVA test was used (p < 0.05). Results: Significant differences of FA between EOS-patients and controls in the right ALIC with lower values of FA in EOS were observed. Within the women subgroups , statistical differences of FA were observed only for the right ALIC. There were no statistically significant differences within men subgroups. Conclusions: 1. Statistically significant differences were found between EOS – subjects (subgroups of woman only) and the control group within the WM diffusivity of the brain in the right ALIC. 2. These results indicate possible involvement of the structures of internal capsule in the EOS development.

Do analizy zebranych materiałów empirycznych wykorzystany został paradygmat interpretatywny, który daje możliwość uchwycenia interakcyjnego charakteru powstawania emocji negatywnych i pracy emocjonalnej.

Książka składa się z dwunastu rozdziałów, gdzie najpierw przedstawiona została przyjęta w pracy perspektywa teoretyczna i metodologiczna, zaś w dalszej części omówione zostały kwestie formalno-prawne związane z funkcjonowaniem badanych instytucji, by potem wprowadzić Czytelnika w niuanse związane z nieformalną stratyfikacją zwaną „drugim życiem”, pozwalającą zrozumieć zagadnienia opisywane w części wynikowej.
