By fusing the narrative pacts of the autobiography and the autobiographical novel, autofiction establishes an ambiguity similar to that of the ‘vacillation’ between the strange and the marvelous, which lays the foundations of the fantastic genre. The continuous allusion to the author’s person, in addition, provides the reference to reality, which is crucial in accentuating the uncanny, and intensifies the sense of perplexity experienced by the reader. This affinity between these concepts will be illustrated in Cómo me hice monja (1993), a short novel by César Aira, in which autofiction elicits the fantastic, at the level of ‘perception’, by merging with the monstrous, and by establishing a posthumous narration, at the level of ‘language’. By acting in concert, these two modalities revive ancestral fears and corroborate the unusual character of the fantastic genre.

In the diptych Cuaderno de navegación en un sillón Voltaire, Bryce Echenique rewrites two classical myths and presents them as complementary. La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña alters the Oedipus myth, connecting the protagonist's oedipal complex to the nostalgia for his Peruvian homeland during his exile in Paris and also to his mother's literary ideals. Allowing him to criticize an inauthentic left-oriented discourse, which was common during the student revolt, these values change Oedipus' blindness into clairvoyance. Since the hero's acuteness serves as a guide for the understanding of the whole book, it links up with the Ariadne myth in El hombre que hablaba de Octavia de Cádiz. In this novel, Octavia shows the hero how to get out of his existential labyrinth opening up the way for a literature that focuses on artistic refinement and the transnational projection of Latin America.

ABSTRACT: According to Erdal Jordan, the hesitation process, which is the funding principle of fantastic literature, is increasingly linked to experiments with narrative enunciation in postmodernism. Concerning this, the short stories included in Control Terrestre (2013), written by the Peruvian author José Güich Rodríguez (Lima, 1963), combine some traditional fantastic issues defined by Honores, such as the presence of futuristic machines, the use of symbols and allegories and experiments with double characters and narrators, with some techniques that focus on the structural aspects of the text. More specifically, we will analyze in three of these short stories how the play with the text included in 'metafiction' and explicit and implicit intertextual references create a similar hesitation and design the 'fantastic' effect at the level of language.

In appearance a sentimental novel, reminiscent of much ‘postboom’ literature at the end of the twentieth century, Travesuras paradoxically puts forward some major issues of the successful ‘boom’ generation. This is shown in the novel’s technically refined handling of narrative space, in topics such as voluntary exile, and in intertextual references. All of this embodies the tension between reality and fiction and the existential relevance of literary authorship.

Nevertheless, Permiso para sentir and the author’s other chronicles teach us that this indirect treatment puts forward a systemic violence which is constantly present under the skin. These chronicles show how this subjacent violence is countered by a symbolic variant proceeding from a subtle play with narrative structures. These two types of violence establish a very specific point of view that orientate the author’s global narrative work and questions the false utopias that are generally constructed in some stereotyped discourses about Peru and Latin America.
Since many scholars agree upon the fact that literary translation respects as far a possible narrative structures, this contribution tries to investigate to what extent such an affirmation is valid for focalization. This aspect is of paramount importance because, by the shifts of points of view it originates, it canalizes information and offers a very specific image of the narrated world, especially when it involves some implied modalities. As an illustration, we will be showing how some differences in French translation of implicit focalization in La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña and El hombre que hablaba de Octavia de Cádiz, two novels of Alfredo Bryce Echenique, blur part of the ideological implications included in the original and have repercussions on the reception process as such.
