It seeks to provide a background overview of research in this area through a review of selected empirical studies of F/OSSD processes. The results and findings from a survey of empirical studies of F/OSSD give rise to an interesting variety of opportunities and challenges for understanding these processes, which are identified ...

However, community-based development often falls short of creating software “products” in the sense that consumers understand. Our research identifies an emerging business network archetype in the OSS sector, the open source service network (OSSN), which seeks to address the “productization” challenge. To do so, OSSNs must overcome the problems associated with ...

In this paper we present a reference model which can be used as a reference point for any company wishing to review their own DD scenario. This is particularised in two forms, one as an exemplar model for a global (GSD) development scenario and one as a particularisation of this for intra-national DD scenarios. By drawing from eight case-studies on DD, we present ten general strategies for successful DD together with our reference model which characterises an ideal DD situation.

The term "software crisis" was first coined more than 30 years ago, and may be simply summarized as software taking too long to develop, ...
"Pure" autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraparesis (AD-HSP) is clinically... more "Pure" autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraparesis (AD-HSP) is clinically and genetically heterogeneous. There are at least seven genetic loci with varying ages at onset and disability. The SPAST gene at the SPG4 locus on chromosome 2p is the major disease gene for AD-HSP. To investigate whether there are distinct clinical features among families with AD-HSP due to SPAST mutations compared with families excluded from SPG4. Nineteen families with "pure" AD-HSP were identified, and the clinical features of family members were compared using a standard protocol. With use of genetic studies, the families were divided into two groups for comparison: those with mutations in SPAST, the "mutation-positive" group, and those excluded from SPG4 on the basis of linkage studies, the "SPG4-excluded" group. Twenty-nine individuals from four families had mutations in SPAST, whereas 22 individuals from three families comprised the SPG4-excluded group; in 11 families, the pattern of linkage was unknown. In the one remaining family, no mutations were found despite strong linkage to SPG4. Different mutations were identified in the four SPAST pedigrees, but the clinical picture was similar in each. Comparison of the mutation-positive group with the SPG4-excluded group revealed an older age at onset (p = 0.03), more disability (p = 0.001), more rapidly progressive paraparesis (p = 0.044), and more cognitive impairment (p = 0.024) among affected individuals with SPAST mutations, not confounded by disease duration. Despite different mutations, SPAST families have a similar phenotype that can be distinguished from other genetic groups.

We present findings from interviews with key members of seven prominent volunteer-based open source projects, all of which have adopted a time-based release strategy. We discuss the importance of release planning, the numerous challenges that can result from a lack of such planning, and the benefits of time-based releases. Finally, we discuss how an open source project can adopt a time-based release strategy.

Making Sense of the Bazaar: 1st Workshop on Open Source Software Engineering brought together 30 researchers and practitioners from 8 countries to discuss Open Source Software as an emerging Software Engineering paradigm. The full proceedings of the workshop have been made available online, and the full workshop report will be published in a special issue of IEE Proceedings --- Software on Open Source Software Engineering.
