We exemplify this claim by considering the allophonic gemination of post-stress consonants in Bologna and Porto Maurizio dialects, two varieties which display contrastive vowel length. After the experimental confirmation of vowel length contrasts and the existence of differences in the duration of the post-stress consonants, we qualitatively analyze intensity contours. Despite similar duration values, in light of different intensity patterns and rhythm accounts, we hypothesize that post-stress gemination derives from close contact in Bolognese, due to a stronger compensative pattern, while it is residual or due to the pressure of standard Italian in Portorino.

These varieties, albeit very similar, are usually said to differ in the implementation of vowel length, which seems more robustly attested in Genoese and appears to gradually fade along the Western coast of the region. Our analysis relies on two production tests, which also permit to investigate the effect of the utterance-final position and discourse focalization on the phonetic realization of vowel length. The results show that short and long vowels significantly differ in all the examined contexts and in both dialects. Moreover, the utterance-final position and focali-zation have a significant lengthening effect in Genoese and Portorino; however, their patterns, as expected, are quite different from each other. Furthermore, the phonological constraints on vowel length imposed by pre-pausal lengthening differ in the two dialects. Finally, although we can infer from the two experiments that the status of vowel length in the two varieties is relatively stable, we observed a tendency for vowel length contrasts to be easily outranked by other intervening factors as a primary cue for distinguishing various sub-minimal pairs.

The corresponding regional Italian already had 5 phonemes, mid-high and mid-low vowels being allophones of
/e/ und /o/ respectively in open and closed syllables. According to our analysis, based on data collected in 2014 and grouped by gender, age and residence (inhabitants of Bari vs. migrants), the opposition is now completely disappeared. Moreover, innovative speakers show a generalized lowering (higher F1 values) of regional Italian vowels. Young females, the group supposed to be more sensitive to innovation, exhibit the same pattern even in Barese.

The rising of this pattern cannot be traced back to a change at the syllable structure level, since a syllable contact C$R is clearly unnatural according to Vennemann’s Preference Laws (1988). In a similar way, Pensado (1988) considers the late Latin heterosyllabic sequences C + glide as conditioned by a morphological constraint. Thus, the recent debate on Timpanaro’s reconstruction leads us to reconsider the late Latin heterosyllabism of muta cum liquida as an epiphenomenon of a general reassessment of the prosodic structure, which affects Latin at least starting from the third Century AD.
