Higher education in many parts of the world has traditionally considered arts and sciences as an odd combination and many institutions have avoided this particular mix. Historically, this has been the accepted view; however, with the emergence of Product Design as a discipline, this view is changing. The paper discusses the changing nature of the design profession and how these changes are manifesting themselves and shows how strong alliances can be built in line with the industry and the general design practice expectations through "Live Projects" where strong client involvement is essential. The paper also provides a detailed account of product design curriculum development at Middlesex University, London, and assessment strategies for enabling arts and sciences to blend in a natural and a meaningful way and offers a case study. The paper details how some of the engineering principles can be taught alongside other softer topics such as the pleasure-based design approaches and emotional ergonomics to a diverse range of student body.

Multiobjective design optimization problems require multiobjective optimization techniques to solve, and it is often very challenging to obtain high-quality Pareto fronts accurately. In this article, the recently developed flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is extended to solve multiobjective optimization problems. The proposed method is used to solve a set of multiobjective test functions and two bi-objective design benchmarks, and a comparison of the proposed algorithm with other algorithms has been made, which shows that the FPA is efficient with a good convergence rate. Finally, the importance for further parametric studies and theoretical analysis is highlighted and discussed.

Stochastic components such as random walks have become an intrinsic part of modern metaheursitic algorithms. The efficiency of a metaheuristic algorithm may implicitly depend on the appropriate use of such randomization. In this paper, we provide some basic analysis and observations about random walks, Lévy flights, step sizes and efficiency using Markov theory. We show that the reason why Lévy flights are more efficient than Gaussian random walks, and the good performance of Eagle Strategy. Finally, we use bat algorithm to design a PID controller and have achieved equally good results as the classic Ziegler-Nichols tuning scheme.

Flower pollination algorithm is a new nature-inspired algorithm, based on the characteristics of flowering plants. In this paper, we extend this flower algorithm to solve multi-objective optimization problems in engineering. By using the weighted sum method with random weights, we show that the proposed multi-objective flower algorithm can accurately find the Pareto fronts for a set of test functions. We then solve a bi-objective disc brake design problem, which indeed converges quickly.

Due to the recent increase in development and use of co-axial rotor system at the scale of small UAVs a greater understanding of the performance variables that affect the co-axial propulsion system at low Reynolds number operation has become increasingly apparent when optimizing such systems. This paper focuses on and details the development and fabrication of a small UAV co-axial rotor system test-rig, and investigations into the optimal inter-rotor spacing range between contra-rotating rotors. An integrated test-rig has been specifically designed for the testing and analysis of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) propellers and out-runner motors which are predominantly used in SUAV propulsion systems. The test-rig incorporates linear motion, yaw, force and other performance measurements, to help validate the identified core co-axial rotor system performance attributes. The co-axial test-rig was used to investigate co-axial rotor systems inter-rotor spacing which identified an optimum ...

This paper describes the investigation of the effects on profitability of production for an Automatic Pipeline, Variable Inventory and Order Based Production Control System (APVIOBPCS) production system using as an example electronic RAM production. The investigation includes varying the order up to inventory and WIP using PID control to illustrate the profit gain from using control analysis. The results show that greater PID gains for a controlled production system will increase profitability. The value of desired inventory level increases profitability with a defined optimum value.

The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and the more recent war in the Gaza Strip have emphasized the need for novel platforms which provide for greater situational awareness in the urban terrain. Without intelligent systems, which can accurately provide real-time information, collateral damage to property will result, together with unnecessary civilian deaths. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that within the next decade 75% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. This paper outlines the current state of unmanned aerial vehicles throughout the world and presents a novel design of a multiple rotary wing platform which has great potential for both military and civilian application areas.

The shortage of degree qualified engineers in the UK is well documented. On the other hand the surplus of art and design graduates is growing. Whilst acknowledging the shortage in engineering graduates, there is also the need to recognise the breadth and increased skill level that engineering graduates require. Is it therefore possible to convert some of the excess graduates in art and design to careers in design and development engineering? The success of many engineering businesses depends not only on technical excellence but also on understanding of the market needs and the speed of response to this demand. To make this task even harder, businesses are also expected to compete in markets that are open to global competition and are also faced with much more sophisticated consumers. Businesses that are engaged in the manufacture of goods now require a new breed of engineer. These are not only technically competent individuals, but also possess what is known as "soft" or &...

A non-linear mathematical model for the roll-yaw behaviour of a ship is used to predict capsize of a small tanker which sank in the North Sea some years ago. This capsize problem was initially simulated on an analogue computer by the Danish Maritime Authorities as well as being tank tested. The problem was simulated using the digital package SIMULINK, which produced comparable results indicating instability in waves of just less than 3 m in height. Validation of the results is attempted and a discussion of possible improvements to the model is given. Simulated responses of the tanker with simple hydrodynamic fin stabilisers show that capsize could have been prevented by this means in waves up to 7 m in height. Active PID control using a simple full span elevon is used to show a factor of ten reduction in roll angle to much greater waves. This work is of use to ship designers illustrating that stability can be enhanced for a fraction of the cost of major redesign of the ship hull and...
