Der Geschmack einer Stadt written by the novelist and story-teller Rafik Schami, draws inspiration from the oriental collection of stories One Thousand and One Nights. In Damaskus. Der Geschmack einer Stadt the voice of Scheherazade, the narrator of the One Thousand and One Nights, is replaced by a plurality of characters, each becoming protagonist of a story. The theme that holds the novel together is Damascus’ culinary culture, choosing food as a leading thread that entwines the stories, rather than creating a linear plot. It is a path through the alleys of Damascus, every promenade leads to a district, neighborhood and road, peopled by a different religious community, since Syria during the centuries was crossed and inhabited by various cultures and civilizations, typifying a multicultural society. The work connects past to present, giving interesting details on historical and social issues, embracing Arab civilization at large, and conveying furthermore autobiographical details. The aim is to give Germans an insight in Arab culture, calling for multicultural dialogue and understanding; at the same time underlining German cultural heterogeneity and its hybrid identities.
