The purpose of the study is the investigation of how effective could be one of the first residential training programmes based on structured teaching and the principles of TEACCH method, in declining the frequency of challenging behaviours in adolescents and adults with autism, who had never received any kind of intervention or training. Functional assessment records (ABC) were analysed for each participant and frequencies of challenging behaviours were summarised for three deferent periods of time (beginning of the programme, after 12 and 18 months). The results showed significant decline of challenging behaviours frequency after the start of the training programme. The implications of the results in particular will be valuable for further research and service developments in Greece by the Greek Society for the Protection of Autistic People.

Abstract Many occupational therapists work in the field of movement performance, motor abilities and any kind of associated developmental movement disorders. Today, although different professional disciplines, through their clinical or research work, are engaged with aspects of movement performance, they are using different terms in order to describe similar conditions or disorders. This has led to much confusion between movement performance and motor abilities and around developmental movement disorders; some professionals diagnose developmental coordination disorder and others developmental dyspraxia. In addition, the ICD-10 and DSM-IV use different terms and criteria for the diagnosis of developmental movement disorders. In this paper, the relevant literature is reviewed and an attempt is made to clarify the difference between movement performance and motor abilities. The differences between sensorimotor processing, motor planning and sequence of movement are analyzed. In addition, the different terms used by occupational therapists and other professionals to describe developmental movement disorders are reviewed.

The last twenty years services and knowledge about conditions in pervasive developmental disorders have been improved. However, today there are still people with borderline abilities who are either misdiagnosed or undiagnosed and in many cases they receive accurate diagnosis only after referral of symptoms of mental health problems. One of these examples is being presented in the case study of Khaldon. He is a second-generation adolescent immigrant in Britain with Turkish background. Interviews with his mother and with Khaldon reveal that he has an undiagnosed pervasive developmental disorder, specifically Asperger's syndrome. Despite the limited information about Khaldon, it is notable that he needs support for additional mental health problems. This case study presents Khaldon's psychological problems, the difficulties he faces because of Asperger's syndrome, the confusion of mental health professionals in diagnosing Asperger's syndrome from psychotic disorder and vice-versa and proposes the guidelines of a treatment adapted to Asperger's syndrome .

Occupational Therapy Europe (OT-EU) is collaboration between occupational therapists in practice, education and research to promote and develop the delivery of occupational therapy services in Europe. OT-EU has three branches: practice, represented by the Council of Occupational Therapy in European Countries (COTEC); education, represented by the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE); and research, represented by Research in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science (ROTOS), led by an OT-EU standing committee. Whilst the practice and education OT-EU branches are well established, the research branch is at a more nascent stage. This provides the opportunity for including key stakeholders in the development of ROTOS. In time ROTOS plans to facilitate and co-ordinate a range of activities including: horizon scanning; translating the evidence base into a format and language for policy makers; working in an interdisciplinary way but while keeping occupation and occupational therapy central; linking research and researchers to the health priorities for the European Union (EU) and the World Health Organization; promoting and maintaining a collaborative approach for occupational therapy and occupational science researchers across Europe; and creating educational opportunities for research development; and facilitating the development of occupational therapy and occupational science research leaders (Steultjens and Siaperas, 2017). Members of the ROTOS steering committee will share its purpose and plans and facilitate discussion regarding how ROTOS can fulfil its remit and best work with occupational therapists. It will also present the thoughts of the ROTOS committee on research opportunities and research leadership.
