This paper reports on the Red Fox Vulpes vulpes population estimates inside “El Hondo“ Natural Park (Alicante, SE Iberian Peninsula). The estimates were scored as number of encounters in transects of variable length during 1993-2006. Red Fox counts were
standardized as kilometric abundance indexes (Individuals/km) and
relative densities (Foxes/km2) ). Red Fox was observed in this wetland at very low densities (0,3-0,6 Foxes/km2) ) compared with other
European sites and with an apparently slight tendency to increase
in the last ten years. The relative abundances (IKA) ranged between 0,6 -1,3 Foxes/km. The presence of refuse tips in the boundaries of Park is suggested as factor accounting for the establishment of the Red Fox at this Park. These observations suggest the implementation of specific studies and conservation measures, by means of a particular methodology, to allow reinforce the biodiversity of this wetland for the vertebrates.

Adult sex-ratios in birds can be male biased due to higher mortality in females, whereas nestling sex-ratios do not normally differ from equality. I studied the sex-ratios in the Bearded Tit Panurus biarmicus by analyzing data from captures with mist-nets in southern Spain over a period of five years. I found that sex-ratios in the population were male-skewed (0.61); juvenile sex-ratios approached equality (0.55), but adult sex-ratios were male-biased (0.67). The observed bias in the adult sex-ratio (57-73%) appears to be greater than the adult avian sex-ratio described in the literature (33-65%). I propose a hypothesis whereby higher-than-normal mortality in adult females due to greater predation could explain such biased sex-ratios. Given that small populations with sex-ratio oscillations may be more prone to extinction, monitoring programs and research to investigate the possible consequences of these fluctuations in patchy populations needs to be carried out.

In sedentary birds, variation in wing morphology as a result of complete moult during the transition from juvenile to adult plumage is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to characterise sex-and age-related differences in wing morphology resulting from a complete post-juvenile moult in an isolated, sedentary population of the Bearded Tit Panurus biarmicus at El Hondo Natural Park reedbeds (SE Spain). Variation in wing morphology was evaluated by means of a Size-Constrained Components Analysis (SCCA) of standardised primary lengths of 66 birds trapped for ringing. Wing traits representing size and shape showed differences among age and sex classes, adults having significantly greater wing sizes than juveniles and males less rounded or convex wings than females. Structural body size also varied significantly among sex classes, females being smaller than males. Sex-and age-specific differences in wing morphology of these Bearded Tits may represent adaptations to the sedentary and colonial behaviour of the local population within constraints imposed by a reedbed microhabitat.

Male colouration has a key role in signalling individual quality during the breeding season. Although winter plumage probably correlates with of summer plumage, few studies have focused on the determinants of male colouration during the non-breeding period. If plumage colouration is related to an individual's age or is strongly correlated with body condition during the non-breeding period, this trait could be used by conspecifics to assess quality, origin or status of a given individual. Here, we analysed plumage colouration and body size of male Bluethroats (Luscinia svecica cyanecula) wintering in SE Iberia. We found that young individuals had narrower black bands and wider white bands than adult individuals in their throat patch. Also, the width of the chestnut band increased with later capture date. Finally, blue throat colouration was positively correlated with tail length and negatively correlated with tarsus length. We could not find any significant relationship between throat patch colouration and body mass. We concluded that individual's age and capture date were significantly related to black and chestnut throat colouration, respectively. Therefore, these coloured bands could provide reliable cues on individual's age and their geographical origins. The variability of plumage colouration of wintering Bluethroats provides an excellent study system in which to test further hypotheses on the role of the throat patch colouration outside the breeding season.

Two main treatments of the analysis of wing shape obtained from primary lengths and primary distances were used by means of principal components analysis (PCA) in order to assess age and sex differences in a sample of wintering Bluethroats in SE Spain. A size-independent technique, developed by Chandler & Mulvihill (1 988, Ornis Scand. 19: 2 12-2 16), which does not control for body size and allornetry, was used on the original variables. A statistical modification that controls for allometric effects and body shape (Senar et al. 1994, J.Avian Biol. 25: 50-54) was subsecuently used on the standarized primaries. Wing shape of Bluethroats could be summarized by three Principal Components (PCA) which explained 80% of the total variation. The two techniques differed in their ability to detect age-or sex-related differences in the wing shape of Bluethroats.
