This article discusses the genesis and historical development of the sacred complexes of historic Volhyn. Based on historical and architectural analysis, it is presented that sacred complexes of historic Volhynia were built according to the canons of temple architecture, and at the same time they have their own characteristics, related to national traditions and regional features which appeared as a result of the process of forming Christianity as a religion associated with national development in the specific study territory. The results of a comprehensive analysis of historical and archival documents found in the archives of Ukraine, Poland and Russia, as well as field research are presented. The article analyzes the history of changes in the role of art and the meaning of the symbol in the formation of the sacred space of architecture, which is presented through the consideration of the symbolic understanding of material forms and objects in the traditional and modernist representation. The historical development of the concept of symbol and its representation in art and architecture is presented. The development of the aesthetic category of "beauty" in historical development is represented. Проаналізовано знакові храми ХХ ст. – храми Мозера в Базелі та Мецгера в Люцерні, які згадуються разом як приклади модерністської сакральної архітектури в Швейцарії.Представлено антропософську теорію архітектури, яка припускала що світ і людина пронизані різними типами духовних сил, які завдяки формам об’єктів видимого світу можуть бути зміцнені або послаблені. The article analyzes the imitation of traditional historical forms in the formation of sacred space. The main examples of world architecture are presented, which partially or completely copy the historical forms. The development of the sacred architecture of the modernist epoch in its imitation is represented. The phenomenon of perception in certain visible figures of objects is an expression of a more general situation, an expression of a certain type of views or collective beliefs. The study attempts to trace the techniques and means of using optical illusions in sacral space of ancient temples, which are the subject of architectural heritage and modern trends, analyse the world samples and works of Ukrainian architects. In order to systematize the collected empirical data, it is divided into three main groups: optical illusions in the three-dimensional structure of sacral space, monumental painting, and lighting effects in the interior and exterior environment.
