This paper aims to exploit the role of organizational alignment and people's behavior on big data initiatives in procurement. Through a survey, the results suggest that to succeed, organization and procurement strategies must be aligned and the key driver to advance is cost reduction and the willingness to use new technologies. Although behaviors are relevant in management processes, the buyer's current behaviors do not significantly impact on the deployment of big data strategies. Unfortunately, few studies have looked at the supply chain and operations management decision-making process in emerging countries (Avittathur & Jayaram, 2016), specifically in Latin American countries, and explored how they overcome the barriers imposed by the institutional environment. Rare exceptions like Williams (2015) focused on how to capture FDI for Latin America by expanding the stock of infrastructure and its quality. Due to the chronical issues of infrastructure, logistics, cultural and language limitations, managers have been setting up creative ways of defining supply chain and operations strategies to maintain its competitiveness. This Special Issue intends to open a broad agenda to raise awareness among Operations and Supply Chain researchers of the importance of exchanging experiences from different fields of knowledge instead of exploit findings, constraints, lessons learned at a single perspective (Siegler et al., 2014). We intend to motivate the possibility of stablishing new collaboration between researchers in Latin America, exploring different contexts and aiming for complementary ideas on Supply Chain and Operation strategies for problem solving. Consequently, it aims to advance this discussion through some examples of well-succeeded strategies adopted in Latin America countries and contribute for addressing new directions for future researches.

Instructors need pedagogical materials at both MBA and undergraduate levels for students to explore implications of cognitive biases and bounded rationality (Simon 1955, Hilbert 2012) as well as the affective interplay between people and projects as a whole. This teaching brief presents an active-learning exercise based on a real project named “The Super Formula to Fight Cancer” in a hospital. It involves a two-minute video and team interactions. It aims to provide instructors the opportunity to highlight how, despite being rapidly involved in a given new project, students and practitioners might find it hard to come up with a simple project statement. The exercise illustrates the importance of establishing a clear statement at an early stage.

Many researchers have studied the operational capabilities building process within organizations. However, the literature presents several different factors and dimensions that may influence it. Consequently, it has become difficult to assess this process in an ever more complex environment. In this sense, we argue that CCM supports the analysis of causal relations among concepts in the absence of sufficient theoretical linkages. The study comprises a multi-stage empirical analysis of manager’s perceptions of the factors for building a cognitive model for operational capability dissemination within a network. The results shed light on the opportunity of adopting CCM to support analysis of causal relations in the OM/SCM field.

Brazil is one the leading countries within this proposal competing globally with its sugar ethanol.. Nevertheless, there is a debate between corn ethanol and sugar ethanol .regarding the ap-propriateness to produce fuel instead of food in highly fertile regions. This industry is also severely criticized regarding its socio-environmental practices. We analyzed three cases identified as featuring best practices in this industry in Brazil. Two of the companies are located in the state of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, the most important region in sugar-ethanol production. The third is situated in the Brazilian Midwest, a region with fast growth in this industry. In this region, cattle, soy and corn have been substitute by sugarcane plantation. The results suggest that, when a company in this industry pursues a sustainable approach to its operations, it is possible to mitigate environmental impacts and to improve local social conditions. Such practices are potential sources of competitive advantage. However, clear gaps are still present regarding integration and collaboration along the supply chain. Nevertheless, sustainable business policies have also created new business opportunities. The continuous challenge is to develop synergetic operational capabilities that are able to mitigate environmental impacts, to decrease operational costs and to add value to the products.

As an illustrative case, we used the interface between Operations Management and Human Resources Management fields. The methodology adopted was a bibliometric research through a structured mapping of the scientific production of these two major areas. The results indicated that both evolved independently, with little synergy, given the paucity of works found in two decades of research. The study highlights some factors that can enhance the fragmentation: epistemological views, preferences, and methodological gaps between the authors. From these findings, the study seeks to provoke reflection about the opportunities offered from the exchange between areas for the advancement of knowledge.

Based on a qualitative approach, we have examined articles and papers about sociology and operations management. Although the findings of this paper are still preliminary, it offers an initial understanding of the Economic Sociology field, its classical references, as well as its key conclusions and contributions. Furthermore, it gives an overview of empirical studies that used the economic sociology to study Operations and Supply Chain Management.
