Of those who have sought refuge in Sweden and other EU countries, the vast majority have been received under the framework of the Temporary Protection Directive (Directive 2001/55/EC), which is valid for three years from 2022 to 2025 and was extended until 2026 in June 2024. This Policy Brief summarizes the results of a study focusing on the opportunities and challenges Ukrainians have faced during their first year in Sweden, with key areas including housing, employment and self-sufficiency, healthcare, and education. The study, supported by the Centre for European Research at the University of Gothenburg, gives a voice to 15 women who have been residing in western and southern Sweden since March 2022. Their experiences provide insight into the lives of thousands of other displaced Ukrainians covered by the temporary protection, but are also unique in their own way. The study was conducted by two researchers from the Department of Sociology and Work Science at the University of Gothenburg, Oksana Shmulyar Gréen and Svitlana Odynets.

Handbook of Migration and Globalisation, 2018

Drawing on the existing research, the authors look at which Ukrainians have been more prone to engage in international labour migration since the 1990s, and under what conditions. The chapter highlights both structural conditions and individual motivations of Ukrainian migration abroad that account for why it has exhibited movements that are both east (i.e., to Russia and the CIS countries) and west oriented (to Europe and North America). The chapter reviews the effects of labour migration on Ukrainian society. It also examines the knowledge we have about the internal displacement of Ukrainian populations since the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 and the eruption of military action in the Donbas (the Donetsk and Luhansk regions), and the effects of these events on migratory movements within and outside Ukraine. Keywords: diaspora, networks, gendered migration, poverty, labour migration, post-Soviet.

Hegemonic framing overshadows and sidelines studies of the everyday experiences of Ukrainian refugees and the multiple challenges they have been facing in the EU, where the mid- and long-term prospects of their integration remain questionable.

For different categories of migrants Ukraine is a country to be used for further movement. Highly skilled specialists come to Ukraine, stay for several years and try to migrate to other countries; unskilled workers or asylum seekers are mostly transit migrants looking for possibilities to continue their trans-border movement to West. On the other hand, Ukrainian outmigrants to the EU and Asian countries intend to return home, but are not sure when it is actually going to happen. Sometimes they move from one country or region to another in order to find appropriate life and working conditions. Many of return migrants stay at home for some time and then, lacking adequate employment in the home country go abroad again using migrants’ networks. It means that for many Ukrainian external migrants the return home is only one of the stages in realizing their migration projects....

Massive female labour migration from Ukraine to Italy has now been taking place for more than 20 ... more Massive female labour migration from Ukraine to Italy has now been taking place for more than 20 years and shows no sign of diminishing. The analysis presented here is built on fieldwork conducted in Italy and Ukraine between 2012 and 2019-from which four cases have been selected as the main focus and which demonstrate the new way in which female migrants circulate care across and within the borders. The main findings reflect the emergence of a new rotational system within migrants' extended family, when women begin to substitute each other in both reproductive and productive work. It allows them not only to balance the distribution of care responsibilities in the families left behind but also to make way for gaining new capital from mobility for their female relatives. In this way, migrants can better control the 'supply' and 'demand' of care and, thus, increase their personal empowerment in transnational space. Care then becomes not only a commodity but also a resource for resolving identity crises and achieving increased personal agency.

Not really at home: Adaptation strategies of Asian migrants in Ukraine, 2020

These migrants transited through Ukraine and ended up in the country when their plans for further migration to European Union countries or the United States of America did not materialize. It examines how migration outcomes are affected by the migrants' social capital and sheds light on their alternative resources to cope with life in Ukraine given limited state support. The results show significant differences in the adaptation and possibilities for legal ways to migrate to other countries for migrants coming from Central Asia, Afghanistan and other Asian countries.

This specific group of migrants in the social structure of Ukrainian migration is explored for the first time in Ukraine. The author explores the features of “professionalization” of Ukrainian women’s migration at different stages of migration – at the time of departure, during the period preceding the legalization and in the period of active integration into a host society after obtaining proper legal status. The author broadens existing approaches to the concepts of professional migration and social self-identification. The author argues that migration of women with high level of social ambitions could be considered as their emancipation project.
Key words: feminization of migration, social self-identification, professional migration
