Petroglyphs of Inner Mongolia were studied and published by Gai Shanlin, Liang Zhenhua and N. Dalengurib. All four monographs on Ningxia rock art – by Zhou Xinghua, Li Xiangshi and Zhu Cunshi, Xu Cheng and Wei Zhong were published almost simultaneously, at the beginning of the 1990s. Ancient rock art of Xinjiang was published in albums by Zhao Yangfeng, Wang Linshan and Wang Bo and in books by Wang Binghua and Su Beihai. The monograph by Tang Huisheng and Zhang Wenhua was devoted to the description of Qinghai petroglyphs and the problems of their interpretation. Generally, it can be stated that modern Chinese scientific rock art research was born in the first half of the 1980s, when the first articles on rock carvings started to appear in Chinese archaeological periodicals and flourished in the second half of the 1980s and the 1990s, when quite a number of monographs were published. Eastern Han Empire was not fully aware of the resources and possibilities it possessed, but was still an ambitious one, and such conjunction led to its exhaustion. In a pursuit of maintaining the status of powerful state, Eastern Han mounted a number of military invasions, with Dou Xian and Ban Chao as their commanders, but such actions were not fully effective. In strategic terms the elimination of predictable Xiongnu state created the political blank space at the northern frontier, which was quickly filled with aggressive and unorganized Xianbi (Xianbei) tribes.Control over «Western region» steadily became too expensive, and could not be executed by Han. While court, palaces and civil powers were sponsored by the central part of China, military efforts relied on the border districts. Once their resources were exhausted because of the dynasty’s ambitions, the government tried to squeeze more from local landholders, but, instead, faced resentment and indignation. The problem was aggravated by consecutive epidemics and revolts. In an attempt to fix the situation, the military campaign in the north was curtailed and the army received a command to withdraw. It caused immediate effect – part of troops mutinied; most of the peasants in the region raised an insurrection. Unstable situation in the north-west could not be balanced even by military force, because the Empire didn’t posses resources to do so. High demands of the military actions destroyed the government budget. In a long-term plan the loss of the Western region and lack of tax revenues due to it meant that taxes must be collected from the prosperous territory of the central regions, which were fully controlled by the land-owning families. In the end, weakened government couldn’t impose its demands on land owners, and any attempt to do so was met with indignation. The roots of military and political border crisis can be traced back to Guan Wu-di, who started the policy of disarmament of the population and continued to «colonize» north-western districts with criminals. As a result, Later Han had an unstable, «barbarized» frontier army, which has easily turned on the capital with a wave of Dong Zhuo’s hand. Moreover, «private armies» were nothing but a consequence of local militia’s attempts to stop insurrections. Torn apart, bureaucracy had no one to rely on, since scholars were not eager to follow Dou Wu’s fate, generals were interested in spoils of war and in power, and big landowners – in their own profit.

Selenga petroglyphs with fences are rock paintings, consisting of “fence” filled with dots, a bird with spread wings, flying over it and several human figures inside it or near it. A.P.Okladnikov dated these petroglyphs by comparing them with drawings on the handles of “Tagar-shaped” bronze knives from stray finds. He came to the conclusion that petroglyphs of Selenga group appear at the same time and coexist with slab stone graves since the second half of the II millennium B.C. till the Xiongnu time. I.I.Kirillov had compared belt buckles with birds of Dvortsy culture, which precedes the slab stone graves culture, with rock paintings of Selenga style. A scene cast on the back surface of Shangcunling mirror is similar to the scene on stag atone No 15 from Ushkiin-Uver. Below it is a bird with spread wings. Multiple analogies to the birds with spread wings are also met in the Xiajiadian Upper Layer culture (“Nanshangen type”) spread in the southern part of North-East China (Dongbei) in the IX-VII centuries B.C.

The Wujiachuan rock-art site in Jingyuan County of the Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) was discovered in 1976. The west surface of the site has carvings of eight horsemen and several anthropomorphic figures. Six of these riders and one standing man are wearing headdresses resembling a crown with three ‘horns’. Chinese archaeologists date the site from Neolithic to the beginning of the CE.
The standing figure from Wujiachuan however can also be perceived as a seated one if its very long, downward ‘arms’ are to be considered as the outline of a wide-brimmed robe, and the carved lines within it are the ‘real’ arms folded on the chest or on the stomach with bent legs. This interpretation corresponds with ancient Turkic images of Gorny Altai and other regions.
In Grave 16 of the Kudyrge burial ground in Altai, a boulder was excavated, on which the so-called ‘knee bending scene’ was engraved. A seated woman in a three-horned headdress with a child is depicted, before whom three much smaller in size dismounted horsemen are bowing. The middle horseman is also wearing a three-horned headdress. Engraved images of women in three-horned headdresses were also met on rocks and on bone artefacts from Kirgizia, Kazakhstan and Khakasia.
Having considered previously suggested versions that this was how the ancient Turkic deities or shamans were presented, Yu. S. Khudyakov came to the conclusion that these ‘three-horned’ images conveyed the headdresses with a high conical top and side ear-flaps of ancient Turkic women. However, the engraving from Dyalbak in Eastern Altai testifies that the horseman's three-horned headdress may not necessarily be ceremonial or ritual, but a variation of a conical combat helmet with horns.
P.P. Azbelev interprets the ‘knee bending scene’ from Kudyrge as a reflection of the Christian (Nestorian) narrative of worship of the Magi. It can be assumed that the horsemen in horned headdresses depicted at Wujiachuan, grouped in threes on the left and right sides of the west surface are rushing to worship the standing (or rather sitting) figure to their left also in a three-horned headdress. This personage, just like on the Kudyrge boulder, surpasses both riders and even their horses in height.

Among archaeological research of the transitional period from late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages in North China, Xianbei studies hold one of the key positions. This paper is devoted to the review of all Xianbei period burial sites from Inner Mongolia. Based on the primary Chinese and Japanese publications of the material discussed, the author examines the time and circumstances of the investigation of each site, the number of unearthed burials, describes burial constructions, burial rites and grave goods. The entire territory of Inner Mongolia can be divided into three parts: Northern, Eastern and Southern. The Northern part includes the territory of the Hulubuir Prefecture-level City (previously – League) and contains eight burial sites. The most important of these are Zhalainoer, Wangong, Labudalin and Tuanjie. The Eastern part of includes the territory of the Hinggan League with the administrative center in Ulanhot city, Tongliao Prefecture-level City (previously – Zhelimu League) and Chifeng Prefecture-level City (previously – Zhaowuda League) and contains six burial sites. The most important of them are Beimanitu, Liujiazi and Nanyangjiayingzi. The Southern part includes the territory of the Xilingol League with the administrative center in Xilinhot city, Ulanqab Prefecture-level City (previously – League), Hohhot Prefecture-level City, Baotou Prefecture-level City and Ordos Prefecture-level City (previously – Yikezhao League) and contains 29 burial sites. The most important of them are Sandaowan, Dongdajing and Qilangshan. It is noteworthy to mention that “Xianbei” burial sites from the three parts of Inner Mongolia differ greatly from each other which may be explained either by their evolution spreading in time and space or by the ethno-tribal diversity of their masters.

Archaeological materials from the «royal» graves M16 and M01 of the cemetery on the plateau to the north of the ancient city of Jiaohe in Turfan county, Xinjiang-Weiguer Autonomous Region of the PRC are analyzed in this article. According to ancient Chinese chronicles, the last centuries B. C. – first centuries A. D. were the time of hard fighting between Han Empire and Xiongnu for Turfan. The graves of Jiaohe most probably belonged to the nobility of Jushi (Chushi) state. They were dated by the Chinese researchers to the Han time. But our analysis of Jiaohe materials showed that the cemetery on the plateau to the north of the ancient city of Jiaohe must be dated not to Hunno-Sarmathian (Han), but to the previous Scythian time (V–IV centuries B. C.). According to archaeological analogies from Altai region, the tomb M16 is dated to the early Pazyryk period (the first half – the middle of the V century B. C.). Tomb M01 is much later and is dated to the second half of the IV century B. C. So, Jushi (Chushi) state had, perhaps, already existed in the Scythian time.

The article presents material found in ZQM 20 grave of Qilangshan burial ground excavated in Inner Mongolia autonomous region of PRC in 1995–1996. The dead man was buried stretched on his back with his head to the North in a wooden coffin, placed in a catacomb. The entrance of the catacomb was covered with the stone wall. The grave goods included one pottery vessel, one iron ring, one bronze buckle and two cast bronze earrings with agate and glass bead pendants. The same type of bronze buckle has been found in M24 burial of Xianbei cemetery at Labudalin together with Wang Mang period bronze coins, minted in 7–22 A.D. So Qilangshan burial ground should also be dated to Xianbei time. All Xianbei earrings from Laoheshen and other cemeteries known before were not cast, but made of twisted wire (mostly golden or silver) and lacked bead pendants.

This article presents a brief review of the most specific feature of Sanxingdui Bronze Age culture, spread in Sichuan province of the PRC – bronze masks, found in sacrificial pits. The lines of the possible evolution of those bronze masks are outlined in the article and reconstructions of the ways of their everyday use as the details of the interior of ancient temples are given. According to the authors’ opinion the technological evolution of those bronze masks from Sanxingdui sacrificial pits can be divided into three stages. Stage I is represented by bronze mask from the first sacrificial pit (JK1) and types D and B bronze masks from the second sacrificial pit (JK2). Stage II is represented by types C and A bronze masks from the pit JK2. Stage III is represented by large zoo-anthropomorphic masks with multiple bizarre bronze details from the second sacrificial pit (JK2). Authors state that bronze masks of C type were used in combination with zun and lei bronze vessels from the same sacrificial pit JK2 as parts of huge anthropomorphic sculptures (with wooden core). Flat bronze maskoids from the second sacrificial pit (JK2) were originally details of carved (?) or painted figures of human-bird, placed on the walls of ancient temple at Sanxingdui.

Burial constructions of the cemetery on the plateau to the north of the ancient city of Jiaohe in Turfan county, Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC are analyzed in this article.

AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF ITERIOR DETAILS OF ANCIENT TEMPLES
This article presents a brief review of the most specific feature of Sanxingdui bronze age culture, spread in Sichuan province of the PRC – bronze masked heads, found in sacrificial pits. The authors state that those pits were the results of the intended attempts made by ancient people of Sanxingdui to transfer their temples from this world to the other one. Examples of the reconstruction of the details of the interior of those temples are given.

Burial constructions of the cemetery on the plateau to the north of the ancient city of Jiaohe in Turfan county, Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC are analyzed in this article. The graves of Jiaohe most probably belonged to the people of Jushi (Chushi) state, that, perhaps, had already existed in the Scythian time.
