Welcome Didache: Faithful Teaching Volume 23, number 2. This special edition includes responses from around the world in preparation for our Global Theology Conference, “In the Power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:14), to be held in April 2024. The journal published the original plenary papers in Volume 22, number 1 (November 2022) to allow for each global region to review written responses, select by region the best responses for the conference and offer those writings translated for conference attendees and for the rest of our reading community. We include the formal introduction for these responses written by Dr. Klaus Arnold, Director of Global Education and Clergy Development, and from Dr. Jeren Rowell, President of Nazarene Theological Seminary. The information now serves as a backdrop for this edition of the journal.

14For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3.14-19, NRSV)

Welcome to the Volume 23:1 (May 2023) and the beginning of the twenty third year of publishing Didache: Faithful Teaching. Our current publication picks up with a theme from last edition, the experience of women in ministry, then moves to remember one powerful woman theologian Mildren Bangs Wynkoop. The journal continues to more historical treatises of denominational polity and the care of the vulnerable from the most unlikely source, to the role of technology in education and even publishing. This edition will be the final offering before returning to the Global Theology Conference edition with both plenary and response papers in place before the conference’s scheduled meeting. So, with the Global Theology Conference, and supplemental articles from regional submissions, the journal will be on track to navigate to Volume 24.

Social media presents both challenges and opportunities regarding education and professional development in Christian ministry within and beyond the classroom. Ministers, like those in other professional fields, must manage their digital footprint to avoid costly mistakes. Similarly, Christian educators may find themselves establishing guidelines to protect the safety of students and professional practice due to unwanted social media use. In the face of the challenges, social media may still offer creative options, harnessing selective attention often attributed to multitasking. Case studies highlight the possible steps Christian educators may use to respond proactively with social media in the classroom.

covered principles are highlighted and summarized. Pearson also offers a “Reader’s Guide” to this book on-line. In today’s post-modern, post-Christian, and anti-biblical culture, That’s a Great Question addresses an often overlooked topic within the contemporary church—the logical and intellectual defense of the faith. Pearson’s book would be a helpful tool in both the academic and ecclesiastical classroom. Today’s maturing believer needs to be able to logically and intellectually engage those who would attack, destroy, and denounce the historical accuracy, honesty, and veracity of the biblical text. This book enables the reader to do just that—defend the faith with confidence. There is a real need for this work, and I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend this book.

Contemporary attempts to renovate evangelical Christian discipleship in the 21st century include efforts to resolve the relationship between modern Christian education paradigms and the rediscovery of ancient Christian (spiritual formation) practices. One example resides in the current research on Practicing our Faith (Bass, 1997), and in age-level emphases on formational practices beginning to surface (Jones, 2003). Additional studies are needed for comprehensive approaches to Christian education in the 21st century. Evangelical Christian educators seeking new paradigms may find another example closer to home in John Wesley's means of grace. Wesleyan educators may have something distinct to offer contemporary evangelicalism if they can first embrace their own heritage and work to develop an approach that embraces the three emphases of formation, discernment, and transformation. A beginning point may be a new text currently emerging from Wesleyan educators within the Church of t...

Educational providers, district leadership, and local congregations need to recognize that clergy education reflects something much more than subject headings or outcomes-based education. By seeing the various domains as representing ministry practices, or disciplines, educators can provide sufficient intensity of instruction to help students gain exposure to not only demonstrate basic competence, but also understand the vision that guides that discipline and the virtue, or excellence, possible over time.

When thinking about faithful teaching in a Wesleyan Tradition it seems only appropriate to consult occasionally the thoughts of our "great grandfathers," the brothers Wesley. However, since 18 century preaching prose is not the most stimulating way to begin, it might be best to start with a worship chorus to focus our attention, penned by John's brother Charles but really surfacing out of their mutual passions.

The recent cinematic portrayal of P. D. James’ novel Children of Men raises particularly stark images of a society bereft of children. What happens to the social order when children remain “absent” from the lives of adults? By extension, happens when children are “absent” from congregational situations, or at least considered invisible, to the spiritual practices at hand? The following article revises current definitions of children’s spirituality by offering Trinitarian view for shaping congregational practice around the presence of “with” children as participating agents who, according to the gospel of Luke remain “at the Center of the Kingdom of God. Critiquing views that reduce children to something incomplete as human beings, the article builds upon Robert Coles and Martin Marty’s exceptional but intricate theoretical observations around the “mystery” of the child. The article closes by providing one example of the very place of children in shaping the “heart cries” of prayer w...
