Efthimios Bakogiannis is an Urban Planner and Transport Engineer, working as a research associate in National Technical University of Athens, School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Department of Geography and Rural Planning.
He is one of the founding members of the 'Sustainable Mobility Unit-SMU' in the N.T.U.A. http://www.smu.gr/. Efthimios is teaching various undergraduate courses, including Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Housing Networks, Methods and Applications of Urban Design and Environmental Planning as well as postgraduate courses related to Housing Settlements' Networks.
As a researcher, he has participated and/ or fully conducted numerous projects such as strategic plans for the development of sustainable mobility conditions, several researches on application methodologies of combined urban planning and traffic policies for the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the European Commission etc.
As a freelancer, he has conducted several studies for the integration of bicycles and pedestrian routes as well as for traffic regulations and controlled parking zones in various municipalities around Greece.
He has published Lecture Notes, Journal Papers and presented his research in various national and international conferences.

This work specifically refers to the area of the Eretenio theatre on the bank of the River Retrone. The theatre was bombed and destroyed in 1944. Intimately part of the historic center of Vicenza, this abandoned area gradually lost its functional and social identity. The idea of rebuilding that degraded place has long been the object of discussion on the part of local authorities. The Eretenio theatre area is one of the subjects recently investigated by our students at the ‘Architectural and Urban Composition 2' course taught on the master’s degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Padua. Students were required to present project hypotheses to reconfigure the lost unity of this symbolic part of the city. Development of policies and infrastructure in Greece is following a rather inconsistent way, especially regarding the integration of cycling in existing open public spaces. This paper presents a research, conducted from 2008 to 2010 in Athens, exploring the development potential of a dynamic cycling scheme which would connect existing large green parks, university campuses and other related uses. The paper is structured in three parts. This seaside town constitutes a dynamically developing tourist destination. Rapid urbanization and the existing transportation network are the main causes for degraded environment, poor service level, congestion and other factors that affect the quality of the citizens’ life. Adding to these, tourist regions like Nafpaktos, have to cope with abrupt seasonal changes in transportation demand, which result to congested streets, due to the overall car-centric culture. Piraeus port is one of the biggest in the Mediterranean, serving thousands of passengers, who use the city as a transport corridor to reach Athens. On the other hand, the harbor gives a sense of liveliness in the city, further reinforced by the advantageous geographical position, important archaeological sites and a beautiful shoreline. New perspectives are also opening up for the city due to the development of a new cruise terminal. Among the crucial challenges faced by Piraeus city is the strong car-dependency. In order to cope with this issue and related impacts, but also to reinforce traditional economic activities related to the maritime economy, the municipality has decided to re-orient its planning efforts, visioning Piraeus as a sustainable coastal and maritime tourism destination. Port-city development requires a strong level of complementary relationships among the focal urba... more Port-city development requires a strong level of complementary relationships among the focal urban operations and port activities. This paper attempts to evaluate and discuss traffic and urban planning policies as implemented in the Greek territory, while proposing alternative approaches to enhance mobility in port-driven spatial entities. More specifically, four small to medium sized cities are analyzed in terms of their traffic characteristics, street geometrical attributes, accessibility and urban forms. All four port cities had been designed to provide ultimate vehicle accessibility from the city to the port, creating a 'street embankment' to the waterfront. The proposed interventions for these four research schemes deal with the enhancement of accessibility to port service areas combined with protective measures for the nearby cities regarding integrated traffic solutions, parking arrangements and radical sustainable mobility policies.
