Yet, the denotation of the very term still remains abundantly paradoxical as different regions and contexts provide different sheds of meanings. In the western scholarship, Islamic moderation is concerned with liberal social norms, hermeneutics, political pluralism, democratic process, organizational affinities, and views of state legitimacy over the monopoly of violence, some kind of adaptation, willingness to cooperate or compromise. However, it is by no means exhaustive as its definition in Islamic scholarship provides some unlike constituents. To define moderation, Muslim scholars, firstly explores to lexical meanings of its Arabic substitute " wasatiyyah ". Secondly, they explore the textual meanings of the word " wasatiyyah " used in the orthodox text i.e the Quran and traditions (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). According to them, moderation is a best suited, justly balanced or middle position between two extremes i.e. extremism and laxity. Their use of the term, is contextualized in terms of counter-extremism, modest socio-religious behaviour and temperate legal position. This research finds out a considerable textual and contextual difference in the use of the term 'Islamic moderation' between the East and the West. Hence, this study aims to explore the lack of integration between both scholarships in this issue.

Understanding the higher objectives of the Qur'ān (Maqāṣid al-Qur'ān) is an essential issue in Qur'ānic studies. The current curriculum design in Sciences of the Qur'ān ('Ulūm al-Qur'ān) partially contributes to this topic; yet there is hardly any course that deals exclusively with understanding the objectives of Qur'ānic discourse. This omission is made clearer when contrasted with another maqāṣidic study, i.e. Maqāṣid ash-Sharī'ah, a branch of learning exclusively concerned with the objectives of the normative portion of the Qur'ān, which has earned a dignified place in the curriculum of Islamic studies. If this latter subject, with its limited scope, deserves to be a specialized course, then it logically follows that Maqāṣid al-Qur'ān—whose scope covers the objectives of the entire Qur'ān—should be given a similar place in the curriculum. Hence, in view of fulfilling this existing gap, this study presents a curriculum framework for Maqāṣid al-Qur'ān in the Qur'ānic sciences ('Ulūm al-Qur'ān), including an introduction, a conceptual background, a discussion of the importance, rationale and benefits of this subject and a course outline. It is expected that this study would encourage academic debate on the issue concerned.

" Maqasid al-Qur'an " appears as an emerging science in the field of Islamic studies that promotes a particular understanding of the Qur'anic discourse. As scholars' contributions in this subject are lacking a scholarly definition of this very science, this study aims to formulate its definition in a scholarly manner. In doing so, this research firstly presents the meaning of " maqasid " as well as the " Qur'an " ; secondly, it explores the key elements for this definition in scholars' views on this subject; finally, it formulates a definition for it in the light of these elements and explains them in brief.
