The Regnum Noricum came under the sway of Rome along with the Alpes provinces and Raetia. Thanks to long-standing friendly relations, and perhaps also the diplomatic skill of the Noricans, whose tribal community professed loyalty to the Imperial House from its outset, the new province thereafter not only achieved a considerable degree of economic and cultural prosperity but even managed to preserve its «national identity» to a certain extent. The latter is expressed in a number of epigraphic documents relating to political, religious and cultural affairs both inside and outside the provincial boundaries proper. The surviving evidence must also be seen as part of imperial romanitas, but at the same time it affords a glimpse of some details bearing on the sense of identity of the Norican people—or rather of some particular groups among them. This is all the more apparent in the religious sphere, with the worship of both indigenous gods and the syncretic cults of what is known as the imperial religion, of which this article looks in more detail at the Genius Noricorum and the national goddess Noreia An equally pronounced «national sentiment» is suggested by the concept of a natione Noricus,…
