The early specimens have a bloated and spindle-shaped center section. During the Early Imperial Period, a variety of glass samples of unguentaria were produced, especially with the extensive use of the glass-blowing method. While tubular, candlestick, and spool-shaped samples were prevalent in the initial stage, the subsequent procedure resulted in the formation of variants of these shapes. The Samsun Museum houses a significant number of glass artifacts. This study looks at unguentaria that were added to the Samsun Museum's collection by salvage excavation, purchase, or confiscation, and which are assumed to be grave discoveries because the majority of them were discovered intact. The artifacts are essential for understanding the political, commercial, and cultural structure of the time period during which they were produced and used, within the context of archaeological evidence. It also assists us in determining whether or not the production of glass artefacts existed. As it turns out, the artifacts analysed in this context were created in comparable fashions, as a result of the prevalent cultural understanding of the time, throughout a broad region governed by the Roman Empire. Consequently, it is believed that the region had commercial interactions with the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean. Since no evidence of a glass furnace or glass manufacture has been discovered in Samsun or its environs, it is possible that the artifacts were imported rather than produced locally. Nevertheless, it seems improbable that Amisos, one of the most established and significant coastal cities of the region throughout the Ancient Period, or Neoklaudiopolis, an ancient city in its proximity, remained oblivious to glass manufacture, a lucrative economic raw material

With the spread of different container forms such as bowls, glasses, bottles and unguentariums, which are products for daily use, they have become appealing to all segments of society and glass works have become an important part of social life. There are many glass works in the inventory of Aydın Museum. In this study, only the unguentariums, which were brought to the museum inventory through purchase, donation or confiscation, and which are thought to be burial finds due to the fact that they were mostly recovered, were discussed. The artifacts are important in terms of determining the spread of similar examples as well as the period in which they were used. It also allows us to obtain data on the place and tradition of production of the works. In this context, it was understood that the works examined were produced in similar forms in accordance with the typology of the region. It is also thought that the region interacted with the Eastern Mediterranean cultures or was influenced by the dominant culture of the Eastern Mediterranean. Findings related to glass furnaces or glass production previously unearthed in the region are also very important data on the existence of local production. Considering these data, it can be thought that glass unguentariums may have been produced in the region and, although not certain, in important ancient cities of the region such as Tralleis, Alabanda, Nysa, Magnesia, etc.

Glass, which was a commodity used mostly by the wealthy class to show off at the beginning, has become appealing to all segments of the society with the development of different manufacture techniques and the acceleration of manufacture. Glass containers, especially in different container forms such as bowls, glasses and bottles, have become an important part of social life and have been used extensively. There are also many glass vessels in the inventory of Aydın Museum. Despite the fact that the vessels discussed in this study were brought to the museum through purchase, donation or confiscation, they were mostly found intact, suggesting that the vessels are grave finds. A general evaluation of the vessels in question has not been made before and has not been brought to the literature. Evaluation of vessels is very important in terms of determining both the period in which they were used and in which geographies similar samples spread. In addition, it also allows us to obtain data in a general framework about the manufacture place or manufacture tradition of the vessels in the museum inventory. When examined in this context, it was understood that 40 glass artifacts in different forms such as amphoriskos, alabastron, oinochoe, bowl, bottle, glass and miniature bottle in Aydın Museum were produced in similar forms in accordance with the typology discussed in previous studies on the region. In addition to these, it can be thought that the region interacts with the Eastern Mediterranean cultures as in other regions of Anatolia or that the Eastern Mediterranean culture follows an expansionist policy. Therefore, even if no definite information can be given about the manufacture site of the vessels, the findings regarding glass furnaces or glass manufacture previously unearthed in the region suggest that the vessels may have been produced within the region and possibly in cities such as Tralleis, Alabanda, Nysa, Magnesia, etc.

Unguentariums, one of the important ceramic groups of the ancient world, contain scented oils, perfumes, ointments, etc. It is known that it is frequently used in daily life areas due to substances. Unguentariums, which are not only limited to daily use areas, have also been used for different purposes as offerings to sanctuaries and grave gifts. Unguentariums are recognized in two different types in the literature as Fusiform (Spindle Form) and Bulbous (Bag Form). In the inventory of the Samsun Museum, there are artifacts belonging to both forms, covering the Hellenistic and Roman periods. In this study, shape groups, typological development and chronological distribution of unguentariums belonging to two form types were tried to be revealed.

Until the Neolithic period, human beings, who obtained their food from nature, switched to agriculture and started grain production in this period. Products obta- ined from grains at every moment of our lives from the Neolithic period to the present have constituted our most important food source. In order for the grains to be consumed as food, it was necessary to grind the grains in an- cient times as well as today. The methods used for grinding have always differed due to seasonal and regional con- ditions. Although the area where the said grinding tools are used varies according to the geographical conditions, they were basically used for the same purpose. It is necessary to make an ethnoarchaeological evaluation that some of the stone stones are still in use today. In the surveys carried out in 61 settlements in Vezirköprü Neoklaudiopolis Ancient City in 2018-2019, the sting stones that were found in 42 regions and used for a very long time constitute our study. While olive and grape cultivation was carried out in Vezirköprü and its surroundings in ancient times, such a phenomenon is not encountered today. Climate changes can be cited as the reason for this event. In the first half of the 14th century, with the beginning of the dominance of the Turks in the geography of Samsun, and the Turks making their customs and traditions fully felt in the region, the usage phase of the soka stone, which they used during the making of the bread they saw as sacred, began.

These are generally made using free-blowing or mould-blowing techniques. Considering their form features. they have 3 forms, , with floral motif-groove decoration, conical and hemispherical. Except for two undecorated bowls, all of them are decorated with groove or fluted decorations. Two bowls with floral motif-groove decoration found in "in-situ" during rescue excavations are distinguished from the others by the technique of their decoration. The bowls are produced with mold casting and shaped using a tool. This type of glass is one of the luxury glass bowls, which is the continuation of the tradition of emulating metal that started with the establishment of the Persian Empire in the 6th century BC. Pottery samples of this type of glass bowls can be seen in Alexandria, Cyprus, Syria and Rhodes in the Hellenistic Period. It is very important that the bowls are found in-situ in an underground carved chamber tomb found in Amisos. Other bowls are typical examples of the Roman Period. The difference in form, decoration and production technique should be due to the period characteristics. Evidence has not yet been found regarding glass production in Amisos or its immediate surroundings. However, considering the large number of glass works in the region, it would not be wrong to think that there is a glass production center waiting to be discovered yet.

Therefore, it has been the focal point of struggle for power throughout history. One of the most intense periods of this struggle is undoubtedly Greek’s colonization process in the region. Greek colonization, considered to date 750 and 550 B.C. and lasted about 200 years, had significant consequences in terms of both Anatolian and Greek histories, and these influences can be still observed in the region. During the colonization process, many colonial cities such as Herakleia Pontike, Sinope, Amisos, Cerasus, Trapezus were established on the southern shores of the Black Sea. One of them is Cotyora. The region made a name for itself especially when it came under the rule of the Mithridates Dynasty, and within the framework of its changing military and strategy, castles were built at many points dominating the Black Sea coastline. In this process, there are quite monumental-sized examples such as Kurul, Cıngırt, Ünye, Gölköy Castle in the region, as well as simpler examples with their size and architecture. One of them is Kuşnafak Castle, which is the subject of the study.

Spindle-shaped unguentarium, also called fusiform in the literature, have been used to preserve perfumes, creams, oils and various cosmetics. Apart from this use, it is also known that it is given to the dead as gifts to sacred areas and tombs. The unguentaryums in the inventory of the Samsun Museum have been associated with the rituals of the dead since they are mostly detected in tombs. Most of these unguentaryums are dated to a brief period between the late 2nd century BC and the first half of the 1st century BC, with the help of context finds.

Moreover, the impact of Ion sculpture schools is also observed clearly in Anatolia. The stele that is the subject of this study is one of the examples on which these impacts could be followed most clearly. In this context, the aim of this study is to date the stele by comparing it to the similar ones and based on the stylistic and typological examination of the figures on it.

Mythology, which emerged as the product of the behavior and imagination of the ancient people in ... more Mythology, which emerged as the product of the behavior and imagination of the ancient people in the face of natural events, has a determining role in the formation of the art of depiction. When it comes to mythology, gods and goddesses come to mind first. However, the animals directly related to the gods are mostly secondary. However, in the art of depiction, instead of many gods, an animal or a mixed creature symbolizing it is used. At the head of these mortars, lions are undoubtedly one of the most depicted creatures. These creatures, which were initially depicted in the form of lions, emerged in the following process, mainly by adding the heads of different species to the lion’s body or adding the lion’s head to the bodies of different species, creating fantastic, mixed or mythologically named creatures. These creatures, which are encountered in almost every field of Urartian art, although they are seen so often, in publications they were only mentioned as a mythological stage or decoration element and were evaluated in terms of form. However, creatures have a very important role that enables us to understand the feelings and thoughts of the Ancient Age people. Considering the researches done until today, it is seen that the studies on creatures do not go beyond a catalog. Few researchers managed to concentrate on their meanings, but since the findings were evaluated unilaterally, very different conclusions were reached, especially regarding the origins of creatures. The most important aim of this study is to accurately determine the origins of the creatures produced from lions and lions, to determine the purpose for which they emerged, and to reveal the traceable development of the Urartian art since the date it was seen. In Urartu art, mixed creature depictions are seen on various works. While arches are the most prominent of these objects, they can be seen in metal works such as votive plates, shields, helmets, pectorals, horse harnesses, furniture parts, cauldrons, jewelry and seals, as well as sculptures and wall paintings. While some researchers grouped these creatures according to the number of feet such as bipedal and quadruped, some researchers divided them into subgroups according to their head structures. In this study, creatures are grouped according to their main body, not according to attachments such as feet, tail and wings.

It is very difficult to seize these structures, which have become favorite places of treasure hunters since the time they were built, due to the valuable gifts, presented to the grave owner It is not possible to excavate all of the tumuli detected in the survey Many of them can only be intervened after they are robbed. Tepecik Tumulus, which is the subject of the study, is one of them. Although it has been robbed, it has been able to preserve largely managed to maintain its architectural form. Considering that there are many tumuli in Samsun and its surroundings, the number of tumuli that can be excavated does not exceed the fingers of one hand. In this context, Tepecik Tumulus provides important information about the burial customs and technology of the region with both the architectural form of the burial chamber and the finding Hellenistic tumuli; it consists of two parts, a tomb chamber and an anterior chamber, and these rooms are entered by a dromo The grave chambers are made of cutting stone and covered with a barrel vault cover. Dromos entrances are generally east oriented. The ceramics found in the tumulus consist of flattened rimmed deep bowls, short necked jars, monochrome and polychrome painted amorph Fine-walled, high technical and artistic workmanship, the characteristic pieces that we can call "Fine Ware" are pink, cream, light cream, off-white and light, pinkish brown paste, lined in the color of the paste and well burnished. Some of these pottery are decorated and some are undecorated. Considering the pottery and the architecture as a whole, it is thought that the tomb structure was built in the 2nd century BC.

Having wealthy lands and seas especially in terms of fishing, mining, cereal, lumber and many other products, Anatolia has become a gateway to liberation for Greeks with increasing populations and raw material problems. It is known that the Greek colonization activities started from the 11th century BC, primarily colonizing the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and then the Marmara and Black Sea coasts. It is generally accepted that the Greek colonization movements in the Black Sea were between 750 and 550 BC and lasted for 200 years. It is not possible that such an important event for the Greeks is reflected in the history and literary texts. Especially legends written by poets and verbally preserving their existence for hundreds of years provide us with important information in this regard. The mythological reflection of the colonization movements in the Black Sea is confronted in many myths. These myths that existed in the mythology of Grek, the Greeks about the Black Sea in the 8th century BC. they are evidence from the end that they have knowledge. The Argonauts legend written by Apollonios in the 3rd century BC is one of them. This myth tells Iason and his friends about the journey from Greece to Georgia to look for a golden post, and the events they met during this time. When myths are thought to be largely personalized or embodied forms of historical or geographical events, it can be thought that the Argonauts Legend is in fact a transposed form of the colonization movements of the Greeks. In this study, the relationship between the Argonauts Legend and the colonization of the Greeks in the Black Sea will be tried to be determined.

The finds recovered from archaeological excavations show that many valuable ornamental items made of glass and containers are widely used in daily life or in graves. Apart from these excavated finds, there are also a large number of glass collections that have come into our museums through purchasing or other means. However, only a few of them appear to have been published. There are many glass works in the inventory of Sinop Museum which is the subject of study. Within the scope of the study, the glass works in Sinop Museum were tried to be dated by comparing the preservation situations, production techniques and forms with the works in Sinop and its surroundings.

Initially, the glass which is used for demonstration purposes for the richer class, has been used as an industrial material with the development of different construction techniques and has become appealing to every segment of society with the acceleration of production. In particular, the glass works which appeared in different container forms such as plates, cups, and bottles were used extensively in the construction of ornamental items which are an important part of social life. The use of glass in the bracelets, which are an indispensable ornamental material for women, traces to the beginning of the IInd millennium B.C. With the development of glass making techniques, these bracelets, which are produced in different colors and types and presented to the liking of society, became an indispensable part of the society because of its similarity with the precious stones with the increasing production from the Roman period and it continued to be used intensely in the following periods. Within the scope of this study, a group of glass bracelets in Samsun Museum was evaluated and tried to be dated according to their form and technical specifications.

Nevertheless, the impact of the Ionian sculpture schools from the late Archaic period in Anatolia is clearly observed. The destruction by the Persians of the city of Miletus, which held a central position in the cultural circle of East Greece/Anatolia, also ended Ionian art. Nonetheless, Miletus-based sculpture schools survived in the northern regions of the East Greek world such as the Propontis, Thasos, Thrace, Macedonia and the Pontus. Sinopean stelai, which were covered in this study, are examples where influence of the Ionian sculpture schools is clearly seen and they are also the most significant evidence that gravestone tradition of Attica also survived in the Greek regions of Anatolia that were colonies of Miletus, particularly in Sinope. The stelai that are the subject of this study are examples on which these impacts could be followed most clearly. In this context, the aim of this study is to date the stelai by comparing them with similar ones and based on stylistic and typological examination of the figures on them.

are the most prominent of these objects, they can be seen in metal works such as votive plates, shields, helmets, pectorals, horse harnesses, furniture parts, cauldrons, jewelry and seals, as well as sculptures and wall paintings. While some researchers grouped these creatures according to the number of feet such as bipedal and quadruped, some researchers divided them into subgroups according to their head structures. In this study, creatures are grouped according to their main body, not according to attachments such as feet, tail and wings.
