The material consists of samples of 204 Inari Saami names from the municipality of Inari, Finland and 161 names from Suõʹnnʼjel Saami village in Pechenga, present day Russia. The used method is an applied version of the syntactic-semantic classification model developed originally by Kurt Zilliacus and Eero Kiviniemi during 1960's and 70's. The applicability of the method on Saami place name materials is critically discussed. The results show that Inari and Skolt Saami place name grammars that regulate the structure and formation of the names differ from one another but there are also many similarities. In Skolt Saami names, a clearly prototypic structure model can be found: it includes two syntactic parts (a modifier part and a generic part) and ends to word laapp 'fishing ground'. The Skolt Saami names are on average one word longer than in Inari Saami. The mentioned type can be found in Inari Saami but there is also a variety of other types that are as common as that. The structure types of Inari Saami fishing ground names resemble the types of house names. The naming reasons, on the other hand, are mostly similar. The most popular reason in both languages is to situate the named place in the surrounding landscape.

The time span studied reaches from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. The loaning and borrowing processes are analyzed and interpreted in a thoroughly studied cultural context. The author claims that the differences in loaning reflects different strategies that aim to secure the existence of minority language and culture, and that the place-names have been used as means of manifesting one’s cultural ownership to the land. The most important results based on the quality and distribution of the parallel names in the South Sami area reflects the existence of two separate name systems and a protective purist strategy toward outsiders. In the Inari Sami area the results indicate that the local Sami community has an open and pedagogical strategy towards outsiders and because of this they have shared the language-cultural code to the Finns. The author has been inspired in her study by the ideas presented in the field of ecological linguistics and cultural onomastics. This paper is based on the results of the author’s doctoral dissertation.

This connection, especially the use of dialect, is considered as a manifestation of the local identity of the poet, but the use of some other features has obviously been motivated also by stylistic and esthetic reasons. As a contextualizing introduction, the author describes the difficulties of a minority writer that was never taught his native Saami language at school and whose first books were published during the turmoil of constantly changing Saami orthographies. In addition, the role of dialects in Saami literature is discussed in more general level.

The paper is divided into three main parts. First part describes the research history and the pre-Christian naming system. A comprehensive review on printed sources is included. In the middle part, the personal name system is described. In addition to the personal names, also patronyms and matronyms, bynames, the use of diminutive forms and the cultural customs related to namesakes are dealt. In the third part, information about the family name system and its history is provided. In the end, the writer discusses the modern Saami name systems and changes that appeared after World War 2, as well as the future challenges of Saami anthroponomastics.

The time span for this project reaches from the Mesolithic till the present-day. Three studies have been completed in the project. The first one deals with meat caches used in the area during the late prehistoric and early modern times. The second study involved an exploration of the operational sequence at a quartz knapping floor. In the third study the relationships between place names, landscape, and the people of the area were analysed to find out the way in which place names carry cultural information from one generation to another. This paper reports on the results achieved in these studies as well as surveys and excavations conducted during the field seasons 1997–2004. The project’s on-going research is also shortly described.

At the beginning of December 2017, this mountain was a topic of a heated debate since a Finnish light artist decided to celebrate Finland’s 100 years of independence by illuminating the snow-covered mountain with blue light creating the colors of the Finnish flag. For the Finns, the mountain is an iconic aesthetic symbol, but some Saami understood the illumination as an insensitive and colonial act and they strongly opposed the project. Employing a discourse analytical approach this article presents and analyses the debate of 2017, but also older texts written about Sana. The aim is to clarify the meanings that are connected to this place and to investigate how they interact with different discourses and cultural understandings of the landscape.
