The paper presents the history of the collection from its beginnings in the early 19 th century up to its present status, surveying the various attempts to catalogue it from early facsimiles to digitized images. It highlights the crucial importance of cross-institutional collaboration for future research on the collection with examples of successful projects.

Over the past few years, new theories about the authorship, date, and original language of the text have emerged, raising new questions about this text and its impact on late medieval art and spirituality. The essays in this interdisciplinary volume examine multiple aspects of the Meditationes history, from its possible authorship to its manuscript traditions to its reflections in art.

The join of these pieces helps to date the British Library fragments to the turn of the 6 th-7th centuries and assign them to Apa Moses from the Monastery of Epiphanius in Thebes. The ostracon now provides a complete and unique text of the Great Doxology as used in the Coptic Church of the late 6th century and probably the earliest version of the so-called Constantinopolitan version of this liturgical chant.

Confirmed participants include Sebastian Brock (Oriental Institute, Oxford), André Binggeli (IRHT, Paris); Maria Georgopoulou (Gennadius Library, Athens); Elizabeth Jeffreys (Exeter College, Oxford), Scot McKendrick (British Library); Georgi Parpulov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria); Charlotte Roueché (King’s College London), Christopher Wright and Philip Taylor (Royal Holloway, University of London). Speakers will discuss a variety of topics related to the Library’s digitised Greek collections, such as Greek-Syriac palimpsests, Byzantine illuminated manuscripts, Greek written culture and the digital humanities as well as cultural interactions between Greece and Britain. The conference will be accompanied by an evening lecture by Michael Wood on ‘The Wisdom of the Greeks’. Michael will be looking at how the legacy of Greece and Byzantium in science, religion and literature was transmitted to the Latin West.

We aim to explore the origins and techniques of this literary phenomenon by analyzing the doctrinal stance of the various pseudo-biblical scenes in order to understand why and how they expand the original narratives and create new, “apocryphal” scenes and motifs. It is the purpose of the workshop to get closer not only to outlining the rationale in the background of these dialogues, but also to understand the origin of the very concept of “apocryphicity” too.

Yet when it comes to writing, past peoples were often much more sparing than many of us today.
