The research deals with concepts, criteria and methods for desertificatione risk assessment in the Ionio-Salento region (S. Italy). Part of this area
is included in dry-sub-humid class, according to the "Carte de la répartition mondiale des régions arides" (UNESCO 1977) as well as to the Aridity Index Map elaboratede by Italian National Committee Against Desertification. This class singles out zones where aridity is related to high antropic pressure rather than to climatic aspects. The research follows three main direction. First, it focuses on theoretical, conceptual and regulatory aspects about desertification within the general framework of enviromental management and risk. Second, it investigates methodological and operational issues concernign desertification analysis and assestament. Third, it studies in dept various factores that contribute to the termin desertification process in the Ionio-Salento region. This investigation assusmes to different and strictly related perspectives: the physical-natural one and the socio-economic one. The result is twofold: on one hand it consist in a Geographic Information System that aims at integrating different data in order to interpret the phenomena under study in their intrinsic multidimensional character and to support monitoring of the desertification processes in the Ionio-Salento region; on the other hand it includes an articulate representaion of thematic information at varying geographies, concerning critical enviromental factors to asses desertification risk of the area at different spatial scales.
