Evolutionary computation for image processing is an encouraging research area. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images when used to characterize metallic and non-metallic nano-particles (size, morphology, structure, or composition), need such advanced image processing algorithms. This paper presents an efficient evolutionary computational method, particle swarm optimization (PSO), for automatic segmentation of nano-particles. A threshold-based segmentation technique is applied, where image entropy is attacked as a minimization problem to specify local and global thresholds. We are concerned with reducing wrong characterization of nano-particles due to concentration of liquid solutions or supporting material within the acquired image. The obtained results are compared with manual techniques and with previous researches in this area.

Stereoscopic and multiview imaging techniques are used for reproducing a natural or real world scene. However, the fact that more information is displayed requires supporting technologies to ensure the storage and transmission of the sequences. Beyond these supports comes watermarking as a desirable alternative solution for copyright protection of stereo images and videos. This paper introduces a watermarking method applied to stereo images in wavelet domain. This method uses a particle swarm optimization (PSO) evolutionary computation method. The aim is to solve computational complexity problems as well as satisfy an execution time that complies with normal PCs or smart phones processors. Robustness against image attacks is tested, and results are shown.

Power flow control mechanism of multiple power sources within series hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is very vital to boost the vehicle performance. However, it is very difficult to acquire the suitable method in controlling the power flow due to the nonlinear system nature of power sources in series HEV. In this research, fuzzy logic control (FLC) is designed for discharge and charge of the batteries using three different shape and distribution of membership function (MF). Membership function shape and distribution slightly affect the performance of power flow between coupled internal combustion engine (ICE) with generator and batteries. Based on simulation, the Triangular MF is decided for the system since it can compensate the power flow performance and lower the fuel consumption. The simulation results show the effectiveness of fuzzy logic control in distributing power flow between ICE-generator and batteries to drive the electric motor.
