This paper aims to investigate the hypothesis that the image used by Aristotle in Poetics, XXI.1457b16-22, as an example of metaphor by analogy – that the cup (phialē) is in re-lation to Dionysus as the shield (aspis) is to Ares, – is, in fact, the crystallization of a pre-ceding rich system of images, and not simply a casual articulation between any two divini-ties by antonomastic characteristic artifacts. By following this hypothesis, we analyze in-stances of the privileged employment of this metaphor in poetic manifestations linked to two markedly Dionysian contexts, name-ly, the symposium and the festival: both are linked to the consumption of wine, and both are made possible by the absence of war. Therefore, in the first section of this paper, we investigate the opposition between wine and war in Archaic metasympotic elegy. In the second, we are interested in wine as a symbol of military truce in the Attic drama presented in Dionysian festivities, especially in Aristophanic comedy.
