By contrast, NATO abandoned such a definition of war aims in the mid-1950s, as human survival, not "victory" in nuclear war, could be the only rational war aim.

The fiction of a "no first use" posture was in fact the practice of launch on warning.

This shortcoming in the literature about strategy begins with Napoleon, who notoriously won most battles but failed to have lasting achievements, and the writings of Clausewitz, who deliberately excluded the political, ideational, and post-conflict dimensions from his writing On War, despite becoming so famous for having articulated the nexus between war aims and political aims.

This article argues that unilateral mass massacres (up to genocide and democide) of unarmed civilians must be included as they form an intrinsic form of warfare.

In the light of the intelligence available to Truman's National Security Council, however, many of the conclusions and the general tenor of NSC 68 seem much more plausible than they have been given credit for.

This choice was not accidental, these three documentaries, the two first of which were shortlisted for the 2012 Academy Award, shed a very instructive light on the problems of violent asymmetric conflicts from three completely different angles. While the “Gatekeepers” focuses on high-level strategic decision making, “A murderous decision”, and at some level “Five Broken Cameras”, present the tactical dilemmas of military officers on the ground. Moreover, “Five Broken Cameras” illustrates the reaction of the local population and the problems that COIN strategic, as well as tactical, decisions create. It is important to note that this review focuses primarily on what these three excellent films convey about these problems, rather than on the artistic merits or weaknesses of each film.

While this is difficult to prove for participants who left no written records, there is considerable evidence in existing publications by practitioners that they did indeed draw out lessons from recent insurgencies, either from their own experience or from events elsewhere which they studied from afar, especially the Spanish Guerrilla, which had already become legendary. Most authors showed an interest in how to stage insurgencies rather than in how to quell them. Even then, transfer did not come in a package of tactics-cum-values, but in each case in different configurations.
