None of these things are possible for the simple reason that in the field of transport and mobility, infrastructure remains fundamental and indispensable. The sociologist and philosopher Bruno Latour was not mistaken when he mentioned this idea in 2008. He goes further by insisting on the idea that this materiality of infrastructures constitutes « immobility of mobility ». During our communication, we will discuss this assertion among other things. As part of our doctoral research defended in 2013, we were interested in the development of motoring, i.e. the use of motor vehicles in the Rhône department and the Quebec region, 1919-1961. In order to adequately cross the two relatively different territories, we have forged the concept of automotive speed. This incorporates technological development, the use of mobility, normalization (through legislation) and territorial transformations. In order to adequately cross the two relatively different territories, we have forged the concept of automotive speed. This incorporates technological development, the use of mobility, standardisation and territorial transformations. For the purposes of our communication, we will focus on infrastructure and its modifications in the Rhône and in Quebec. With regard to the automotive theme, iIn the pre-existing literature on transport and mobility, three movements have been initiated: one focused on studying infrastructure as such . The other, which is more interested in displaced or transported people . A final group exists, the one where researchers try the systemic approach ; this is what we have tried in our past research. This last group agrees with Christopher Wells saying that : “[…] functionally speaking, automobiles and roads are two sides of the same coin ”. In our case studies (Rhone department and Quebec region), the aim is to understand how road infrastructure has developed to adequately meet the car-mobility needs of individuals. With an historical perspective, we explain that the road infrastructure evolved with a complex approach, with a new signalization and an all new network organization. First, we willshow that road infrastructure slowly evolves toward complexity and then, the policies of roadinfrastructure aim at being more efficient and simple for motor users. Our studies is built upon several documentation in France and Canada (Quebec): we used archival sources, periodics, statistics and pho-tographs from Canada and France alike. We crossed them (and not compared them) tobetter understand this evolution.

However, one often forgets that the automobile is not fast by nature or by itself. As the sociologist Bruno Latour stated, to be mobile means to take into account the transportation as well as its environment. Using an historical approach, this paper will demonstrate how motor vehicles became fast. Using my doctorate research based on different sources such as magazines, journals, government sources, statistics, iconography, and tourism guides, I analyze how motor speed expressed itself: first, I study the development of road networks roadside infrastructure; secondly, I examine the culture of speed by focusing on automobile-clubs’ magazines; finally I investigate the various uses of motor speed in rural areas. This work draws on Hartmut Rosa’s study of acceleration, which looks at a slightly later period, as well as Vincent Guigueno’s research on Aerotrain. This paper focuses on the period between 1920 and 1960 in the Quebec region and the Rhone department. These decades witnessed the rise of motorization growth in both territories, just prior to the development of highways. Using a comparative approach, I highlight the similarities between these two territories such as their respective development of agricultural activities, the existence of an urban pole that controls the surrounding territory with a major river, and the postwar mass-motorization that led to highway projects. Of course, there are also important differences between the two locations, such the lack of an automobile industry in Quebec (in contrast to the Rhone department), and their different geographical position vis-à-vis existing transportation networks. To conclude, this paper deconstructs the development of motor speed during the twentieth century. By focusing on rural areas rather than urban centers, it exposes the complexity and diversity of the rise of motorization.

Mobility clearly has a strong material dimension. In these times of demand for "fluid" mobility, ... more Mobility clearly has a strong material dimension. In these times of demand for "fluid" mobility, "autonomous" and electric vehicles, shared transport, the physical infrastructure that underpins and makes mobility possible is subject to profound changes (borders of energy supply, route 2.0, etc.). Infrastructure networks and transport services have also undergone significant material transformations throughout the history of the long term/“longue durée” (macadam coating, steam engines, electrification…).
Generally, vehicles, equipments and infrastructures are considered separately in studies dealing with transport and mobility. However these infrastructures (roads, waterways, harbors, airport, bike paths…) are essential to the physical conditions of traffic in all modes of transport (coaches, cars, buses, boats, planes…). Looking at mobility from the perspective of material culture is a way of articulating these two dimensions and of approaching infrastructure and means of transport based on the most concrete and visible aspects.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the concept of material culture was an important heuristic tool, mobilized in particular by historians and archaeologists. Nowadays, this attention to material issues is being significantly renewed in different disciplines to understand the relationships that societies and individuals have with things and their social life. From manufacture to consumption, the function, appropriation and status of objects evolve over time and according to whoever handles them. This question of materialities is just as essential to the understanding of mobility and its technical, economic and social transformations.
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference is to deepen our understanding of these infrastructures and mobility ecosystems: their functions, the concerned actors, the spatial stakes, the logistical issues, the consequences of new supply chains, and what controversies and challenges they bring, with particular attention to their materiality.
Proposals for papers and sessions on one or more of the following topics will be strongly encouraged, although all contributions are welcome:

- Museum collections, displays and transportation heritage
- Connexions between academic field and technical or economic stakeholders
- Innovation dynamics
- Mobility practices, social uses and consumption patterns
- Places for mobilities (infrastructures, gas station, fuel pump, refinery, terminal, drives in, signaling…)
- Worlds of objects (toys, advertising, tickets, tenues…)
- Duration and obsolescence
- Speed and slow mobilities
- Materiality and dematerialization…
- Tourism issues (travel guides, apps…)
