Passender als mit diesem Zitat von Miguel de Unamuno lässt sich die Situation von Dortmund zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht beschreiben. Denn wie fast überall auf dem europäischen Kontinent, so blieben auch die Menschen in Dortmund von den Folgen, die das Auftreten von Napoleon Bonaparte auf der europäischen Bühne mit sich brachte, nicht verschont. Mit dem Auseinanderbrechen des Heiligen Römischen Reiches ging auch der Verlust der reichsstädtischen Freiheit für Dortmund im Jahre 1803 einher. Die einst so stolze freie Reichs-und Hansestadt war nur noch ein landwirtschaftlich geprägtes, etwa 4.000 Einwohner*innen messendes Städtchen. Der Rückbau des mittelalterlichen Befestigungsbollwerks im 19. Jahrhundert steht wohl sinnbildlich für das Ende der ruhmreichen Vergangenheit, deren Ursprung bis weit in das Mittelalter reicht, und den Wandel zur modernen Industriemetropole.
Seit 2017 begleitet die Denkmalbehörde der Stadt Dortmund die Neu- und Umbauarbeiten auf dem Firm... more Seit 2017 begleitet die Denkmalbehörde der Stadt Dortmund die Neu- und Umbauarbeiten auf dem Firmengelände der WILO SE. Denn „unter Flur“ vermutete man die Relikte der Grabkapelle der Familie von Romberg, also wichtige Zeugnisse von den Rombergs, die als Industriellenfamilie wie kein anderes Unternehmen die Ära des Steinkohlenabbaus in Dortmund geprägt hat. Nach den vorangegangenen Sachverhaltsermittlungen wurde 2020 die vollflächige Ausgrabung realisiert, bei der neben 15 Gruftanlagen auch die mächtigen Fundamente der Grabkapelle freigelegt und dokumentiert werden konnten. Zukünftig werden die Relikte geschützt durch Sand und eingehüllt mit Vlies als eingetragenes Bodendenkmal unter einer modernen Brunnenskulptur erhalten bleiben.

Using this material, various approach-es to a typological system have now been de-veloped to classify this group of finds, which had previously raised only marginal interestamongst archaeologists. The study has provid-ed insight into the economic history of the ear-ly industrialised society of Dortmund. Com-modity flows and trade routes can be traced beyond the regional and national borders to as far away as South America.
A large-scale investigation was carried out at two settlement sites, 1.5 km apart, with asso-ciat... more A large-scale investigation was carried out at two settlement sites, 1.5 km apart, with asso-ciated graves dating from the Early and Middle pre-Roman Iron Age at Bochum in 2016/2017. Complete ground-plans of houses were recon-structed in only a very small number of cases. However, several clusters of post pits which indicate the locations of buildings were identied. The range of nds predominantly consisted of fragments of vessels. A small number of int artefacts, grinding and whetstones, fragments of spindle whorls as well as two beads, one of amber, the other of glass, were also recovered.
