Cunning practices are finely enhanced as the imagination of trade houses met no limits, and perhaps tricky practices constitute a field of research as being a full part of business history. This explains the successive attempts to open doors to flexibility whilst containing it: the case of ‘entrepôt réel’ (bonded custom warehouses) was one solution (B. Gallinato, about Bordeaux; B. Marnot) to counterbalance prohibitionism – which stirred bad practices – by limited spaces of free import/re-export trade supposed to favour good practices, but sometimes prompting traders to push the barriers. One issue that ought to have been deeper developed is the concept of the market economy by itself, either as a free-for-all framework or as a regulated space of business – the first one leading to widespread counterfeiting and the second one to smuggling. The very ‘philosophy’ of the market economy – through freedom or the institutionalisation of codes of rules and practices – ought to have been discussed, with references to broadminded books and essays, to avoid remaining at the level of an intelligent proceedings book, that is to draw more lessons from business history than business stories. And connecting past and present times might have been an opportunity to establish some comparison with the recently emerging globalised economy; but all studies in fact do not delve into such arguments, except the daring one dedicated to eventeenth and eighteenth centuries by J.-P. Poussou, trying to determine whether fraud could have positive effects on growth.

A second issue was the creation of local banking tools, embedded in regional business communities, as leverage to industrial clusters at the heart of the alpine productive system. Two big family banks and four mutual institutions reflected this Savoyard will to resist the grip of banks from Paris, Lyon, and Geneva. A third issue became the “type” of business model of Savoy banks, between a classical discount model, a type of enterprise banking committed to industrial finance in favour of customer companies, and, last, “regional banking”, quite mixed banking. Each period of the Savoy economic growth privileged this variety of models, before a convergence towards a more balance model of commercial banking took shape after WWII.
