The death of loved ones during the flight from their native lands, tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria that wiped out many people sheltering in the swamplands, the hunger, the search for shelter, land and a day’s wages; the inability of the ill-prepared Greek state to deal with such misery, the political conflicts and passions they observe in bewilderment, ignorant of politicized life; the savage exploitation of the poor and the persecuted by the wealthy opportunist, the daily confrontations and the fierce clashes with the natives over the sharing of the paltry resources, the scurrilous attacks, the local community’s suspicion and scornful behaviour towards the refugee, made manifoldin the case of the Turkish-speaking refugee. The collection and publication of these unknown Karamanlidika verses on refugeeism is first and foremost a tribute to their memory.

Philliou’nun 2011 tarihini taşıyan Biography of an Empire: Governing Ottomans in an Age of Revolution başlıklı ilk kitap çalışması Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları’ndan Bir İmparatorluk Biyografisi: İhtilaller Çağında Osmanlı Yönetimi ve Fenerliler başlığıyla Türkçe olarak yayımlandı.

Thanks to press coverage of the visit, the Turkish public had the opportunity to observe Greece's social landscape as shaken by the refugee issue for the rst time since the Greco-Turkish war and population exchange. Whether Greek refugees could return to their former homelands was the focal point of the visit. A month later, the Turkish government granted Greek exchangees the freedom to travel. Prior to this decision, the cabinet had handled authorization requests individually and issued special permits as a palliative solution. The case of the appeal made by an exchangee monk for a mission to unearth hidden relics at Sumela Monastery is especially intriguing. This article focuses on the story of this mission and the historical context that facilitated its realization.

The fire that broke out in the first days of 1929 in Tatavla, a quarter of Constantinople predominantly identified with the city’s Greek identity and past, brought about a large-scale physical destruction. In a period when the Greco-Turkish relations were extremely strained due to the unresolved diplomatic issues stemming from the 1923 population exchange and the internal political atmosphere was chiefly determined by Turkish nationalism the ensuing developments and the provocative press coverage on which the Ankara government’s influence cannot be dismissed resulted in the instrumentalization of the fire in accordance with the nationalist agenda. In this sense, the Tatavla fire, which had been initially considered as a calamitous event, quickly evolved into an opportunity to Turkify the urban space. That is how the historical Greek district Tatavla became “Kurtuluş” (lit. salvation). Extensively utilizing the Turkish and Greek press of the period this study concentrates on the reasons and results of the instrumentalization of the Tatavla fire, how, in the meanwhile, the national memory was rebuilt and mobilized in order to support the nationalist rhetoric and how “Tatavla” has become a lieu de mémoire for the shrinking Constantinopolitan Greek community, the Turkish community nostalgic for the cosmopolitan past of the city as well as in Greek historiography.

There is a well-established literature on monuments as sites of memory (lieux de mémoire), their ability to strengthen national ideology, to shape collective memory as well as to mobilize conflicting memories; and although it seems contradictory, their potential to get consigned to oblivion through their multiple and pliable meanings. In this study, via the narrative of a monument erected in the interwar era, particularly turbulent years in modern Greek history, the memory regimes and the role of the “Asia Minor Catastrophe” and the “refugee issue” in those regimes are investigated. For this purpose, this article focuses on the multifaceted memory of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna, who unifies the purportedly incompatible religious and secular strands of Greek nationalism through his “martyrdom” in 1922, his monument in Athens as the embodiment of this memory and its “adventures” from the 1920s to contemporary times.

The Greco-Turkish Population Exchange in 1923 marked a turning point in the histories of these two countries. At the end of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), approximately two million people were forced to leave their homelands. Not only during the war but also in the course of the displacement, women’s experiences were different than those of men. Women assumed different roles such as fighters, victims, survivors, caretakers of their children and the elderly. While sustaining a daily routine of life and leaving their homelands as refugees, women were subject to traumatic experiences, including gender-specific ones. But they were not only victims of the war and displacement in contrast to their portrayal by scholars. In a period of war, unrest and refugeehood, women developed survival strategies as well. The victimology developed by historical scholarship in tandem with public memory, shapes the representation of refugee women in national iconography, which can be observed in monuments dedicated to the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Although these couplets are well-known, the entire poem is hitherto unknown so are its source and context. This study aims to present the entire poem for the first time and discuss its historical importance by contextualizing it and introducing the poem's author and source. Since these verses are oft-cited and the locus classicus for this issue, the poem's state of being left in darkness creates an opening to discuss the limitations of the existing literature.
