Shoshana had never wanted to be a detective. At fifty, an unmarried teacher of literature, living alone with only the company of her dog, Brutus, the main storms in her life had, until now been strictly restricted to literary ones. But life has a way of leading her to places she had always tried to avoid – death, love, close friendship and betrayal: during a visit to the small village where her sister, Ruth, lives with husband, Miki and daughter Shira, she inadvertently comes across the hanging body of Absalom, an extraordinarily handsome young local boy and a talented musician. It is at this moment that all the order and routine in her life are thoroughly undermined. The mystery that shrouds the reasons for his death and the bafflingly dark and beautiful songs he left behind burn into Shoshana’s soul, enticing her. She is convinced that his songs contain the key to his life puzzle and that only she, the teacher of literature, can solve the mystery of his death. These songs, which contain frequent allusions to the story of Cain and Abel as a pair of twins, express – in her opinion – powerful feelings of guilt and blame.
While Shoshana is still trying to unravel the bundle of lies that had woven itself around Absalom, she suddenly finds herself facing Ehud Shva, a professor of psychology and lover of poetry, a man oozing with charm and shrouded in secrets, who had long ago been the love of Shoshana’s life. It transpires that Ehud has been having a lengthy and complex illicit affair with Hadas, the social worker in Ruth’s village. Both Ehud and Hadas hide from Shoshana the very troubled relationship they had had with Absalom, who had turned to them in his hour of need. Shoshana’s renewed meeting with Ehud arouses long-forgotten feelings in them both and shakes them to the core. Still ambivalent with regard to her attraction for Ehud and the suspicions he arouses in her, Shoshana wonders if Ehud, who was privy to Absalom’s songs, was “Cain,” the murderer …
