Mazingira Ya Lugha, Hali Ya Hewa Ya Kitamaduni, the GLOCAL AFALA 2023 theme, symbolizes the complexity of inter-subjective identities throughout African (sib)urban centres. These complex climates offer a fertile ground for Linguistic Anthropological attention, for which scholars can draw from a range of pertinent fields, to study these geographic and cultural localities. The SOAS GLOCAL AFALA 2023 invites work that addresses the complexity of African Linguistic Anthropology and cultural climates. Papers and posters should acknowledge and describe processes of linguistic complexity at these African cultural centres.

The (SCOPUS / ISI) SOAS GLOCAL AFALA 2023 Conference, The African Assembly on Linguistic Anthropology 2023, which will be held on October 18-21, 2023 at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. For more information: https://afala2021.uonbi.ac.ke (2021 URL retained owing to COVID)
The GLOCAL CALA 2022/2023, as with the GLOCAL CALA 2019, the GLOCAL CALA 2020, and the GLOCAL CALA 2021, responds to concerns by scholars in Linguistics, Anthropology, Sociolinguistics, Sociology, Cultural studies, and Linguistic Anthropology in general, pertinent to Asian contexts. Previous GLOCAL CALA conferences significantly reduced the gap between a focus on Asian regions and work by Asian academics, a gap largely contributable to issues of funding, expertise, and academic ranking. The GLOCAL CALA 2022/3023 will extend on these efforts to reduce the gap, as it aims to further extend the global networks of Asian Linguistic Anthropology, connecting Asian and other Universities and their academics. All papers in the proceedings will be SCOPUS / ISI indexed, and channeled to high impact journal publication special issues and monographs.
The SOAS GLOCAL CALA 2022/2023 will, to a greater degree than before, opportune academics to exchange knowledge, expertise, and valuable Linguistic and Anthropological data across the world, through the interpersonal and inter-institutional networks built by the SOAS GLOCAL CALA conferences. To ground these efforts, the GLOCAL CALA 2022/2023, at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and with major University Partners SOAS, University of London, Stanford University, the University of Hawai’i, University of Illinois, and 3,000 others, and with major global academic publishing partners, will network a growing number of institutions globally, to support this crucial fully global project.
The theme for the GLOCAL CALA 2022/2023 is Symbol and Society, as a two part conference, an online/virtual conference in November 2022, and offline/in-person in 2023. This theme is pertinent to the current state of Asian regions and countries vis-a-vis their global analogues. The University of the Philippines Diliman, hosting the GLOCAL CALA in 2022/2023 in Diliman, in the Philippines, constitutes one of an interchanging series of annual hosts, and in this way, the GLOCAL CALA global network expands to involve institutions worldwide.
We thus welcome you to the GLOCAL CALA 2022/2023, the fourth annual Conference with focus on Asian Linguistic Anthropology, and to the GLOCAL CALA as a whole.
