As urbanisation is rapidly changing the geographic and social landscape of India, issues of collective violence, urban poverty and discrimination becomes crucial factor in the redefinition of citizenship not only in legal terms, but also in a cultural and socio-economic dimension. While Indian cities are becoming the centres of a culture of exclusion against vulnerable social groups, a long-term perspective is essential to understand the patterns that shaped the space, politics, economy and culture of contemporary metropolises. Using the case study of Ahmedabad, this book investigates the history of city and of its people over the twentieth century. It analyses the contrasting relationship between urban authorities and the inhabitants of Ahmedabad and examines instances of antagonism and negotiation – amongst people, groups and between the people and the public authority – that have continuously shaped, transformed and redefined life in the city. This book offers an important tool t...

The worldwide development of ecotourism—including adventures such as mountain climbing and whitewater rafting, as well as more pedestrian pursuits such as birdwatching—has been extensively studied, but until now little attention has been paid to why vacationers choose to take part in what are often physically and emotionally strenuous endeavors. Drawing on ethnographic research and his own experiences working as an ecotour guide throughout the United States and Latin America, Robert Fletcher argues that participation in rigorous outdoor activities resonates with the particular cultural values of the white, upper-middle-class Westerners who are the majority of ecotourists. Navigating 13,000-foot mountain peaks or treacherous river rapids demands deferral of gratification, perseverance through suffering, and a willingness to assume risks in pursuit of continuous progress. In this way, characteristics originally cultivated for professional success have been transferred to the leisure realm at a moment when traditional avenues for achievement in the public sphere seem largely exhausted. At the same time, ecotourism provides a temporary escape from the ostensible ills of modern society by offering a transcendent "wilderness" experience that contrasts with the indoor, sedentary, mental labor characteristically performed by white-collar workers.

Iran’s Nomadic tribes represent part of its rich cultural heritage, and retain traditional knowledge in the sustainable management of the arid nation’s rangelands. Mobile pastoralists constitute 2.1% of the national population and own one‐third of the total livestock, using the country’s otherwise unused rangelands, which cover about 963,000 km2 (59%) of Iran’s land area. Iran’s pastoral stockbreeders produce more than 200,000 tonnes of red meat, 470,000 tonnes of milk and other dairy products and 21,000 tonnes of wool annually. They also cultivate about 450,000 ha of land and produce a significant volume of handicrafts, such as carpets, ghelims and ghabbehs. Although the geo‐climate characteristics of Iran are more suitable for pastoralism, rather than crop cultivation, particularly in the central plateau, successive governments since 1906 have tried to reduce nomadism and promote agriculture.
