The History of the Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language" (История Большого Академиче... more The History of the Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language" (История Большого Академического Словаря Русского Языка) is a massive monograph on Russian academic normative lexicography, starting from academician Jacob Grot's "Dictionary of the Russian Language" to the present edition of "the Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language" (GAD). It covers 175 years of history related to the theoretical and practical aspects of normative lexicography, pioneered by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Linguistic Studies. The principle languages of the monograph are Russian and English. The text of Extrapolated Inferential Propositions or Terminal Objectives is micrographically reduced to be read with a magnifying glass. In practice, "the History of the GAD" shall be considered as the first attempt of introducing this subject matter in English. The Monograph consists of 101 essays and treatises in Russian, English accompanied with essays in French, German and Armenian languages. More than 1,000,000 words were used to describe the subject matter in light of the latest achievements in world linguistics, lexicology and lexicography. The monograph is an introductory volume to the GAD. The entire work, as a single unit, is chronologically arranged essays, directly complementing the main subject. Each chapter can be read, used and lectured independently. Therefore, the work is formulated to appear not just as an appendix to the GAD, serving as a companion volume, but it is also composed and devised to perform as a textbook on Russian academic normative lexicography not just for Russian students of philological studies, or foreign students at Slavic Departments at different universities and russophiles likewise, but, in the interim, to play an essential role to function as a guidebook for professorial lecturers and as an illustrious Preface to the Great Academic Dictionary, as well.

The lexicalized forms were drawn from the modern dictionaries of Standard Russian and supplied with appropriate usage examples from the Russian National Corpus. The paper presents a detailed overview of the forms concerned, encompassing both their formal and semantic features. Each lexicalized form is argued to be a construction, in the special sense accorded to the term in construction grammar. Moreover, not only lexicalized forms as listed in the dictionaries but also their specific instantiations (allowing for the variability of the verb form and the addition of extra elements, e.g., particles) are claimed to be constructions. The paper particularly focuses on the analysis of manifold relations between constructions. In construction grammar, this problem has been given scanty coverage, scholars largely concentrating on taxonomic relations between more and less schematic constructions. This particular type of relations can be said to manifest itself in the links between lexicalized forms and their instantiations. However, the data at hand make it possible to identify a number of other relations. These include the links between lexicalized forms and the corresponding verb as well as semantic relations including homonymy and polysemy, complete and partial synonymy. Taken together, they form an integrated network of relations, both formal and semantic. This is natural, given the fact that the corresponding verbs belong to the same lexical group. The paper argues for the term constructional family to be used in such cases. The constructional family is thus a subset of constructional networks.

However, traditional approaches to the description and classification of parenthetical expressions are marked by heterogeneity, subjectivity and blurred boundaries between the posited groups. The paper suggests a novel perspective on the phenomenon from a construction grammar viewpoint. Theoretical prerequisites of construction grammar are claimed to ensure a well-integrated, systemic framework to account for parenthetical expressions. The key advantage is seen in the specific interpretation of the notion of construction, according to which constructions allow for a certain degree of lexical variation. Parenthetical word combinations with the verbs govorit' and skazat' are analyzed within structural and semantic aspects. The author has identified parenthetical verb phrases of various abstraction deg...

However, prior to it, basic text structuring takes place, resulting in the identification of paragraphs and their types, e.g. title, subtitle, author name(s), chapter and section titles, footnotes, endnotes, figures, appendices, epigraphs, etc. After that, graphematical analysis proper begins. Its aim is to decompose the flow of letter and non-letter graphemes into character strings such as individual words, abbreviations, numbers, and hybrid strings (e.g. mathematical formulae). The procedure implies an iterative process of unit assembling, from individual characters to what is called atoms, next to tokens (roughly equivalent to word occurrences), sentence parts and finally, a whole sentence. At every stage, each unit is assigned its type. Assembling relies on the rules based solely on a thorough structural analysis of context. No formal models or statistical methods are applied, this being a central principle of the ...

As far as word forms are concerned, the procedure is normally called morphological analysis. However, since a text may contain other token types (e.g. abbreviations, formulae, Internet hyperlinks, phone numbers), it is generally referred to as token attribution. In the chapter, a wide range of token types are considered from the processing viewpoint. In particular, the letter token analysis presupposes a search in a number of dictionaries. Apart from a regular Russian morphological dictionary, search is also performed in the dictionaries of abbreviations, of fixed phrases, and of proper names (personal, geographical, etc.). Morphological analysis often yields more than a single attribution. In some cases, the ambiguity can be reduced by taking into account graphematical information, but most often, i...

In the latter, two basic data types are identified, objects and attributes. Attributes are linked to a single object or establish connections between a number of objects (in which case they can be also called predicates). An attribute together with its object(s) forms a proposition. In the information structure, objects can be related to one another either directly or via attributes. Attributes are also interrelated by temporal, causal, and other links. There is no direct correspondence between the constituents of the Subject-Predicate-Objects-Adverbials structure and the information structure components, e.g. the subject of a sentence does not necessarily become an object in the information structure, etc. The analysis of successive sentences requires to keep track of objects and attributes, which brings in the pr...

The list of features assigned to a word form is thus augmented by semantic and syntactic ones. Contextual realization is specified by means of subcategorization frames. Meaning is described in terms of semantic features which may or may not be hierarchically arranged. Among them, basic features are identified, e.g. ‘living being’, ‘action’, ‘space’, ‘time’, ‘quantity’, that have no direct bearing on the parts of speech. Thus, the feature ‘action’ can be assigned both to verbs and nouns. Additional semantic features make it possible to account for manifold aspects of word meaning. Thus, horse is marked both as ‘domestic animal’ and ‘vehicle’, which would be impossible in case of a strict hierarchy of features. The algorithm of syntactic analysis draws on the same basic idea as that of graphematical analysis,...

Frequency word lists are a convenient representation of words functional activity in language as a whole or in some particular text. The parameters and properties of frequency word lists are in the center of attention of NLP experts, since they are used in numerous practical applications related to attribution of authorship, text automatic clustering and classification. The article explores frequency word lists of Russian fiction in the period of 1900-1930, which was marked by a series of dramatic historical events and presents unique statistical data on the most frequent words, parts of speech and keywords, and their dynamics. Special attention is paid to the issues of statistical consistency of frequency word list parameters, which becomes especially relevant when studying big text data. The study was carried out on the basis of fiction texts, which by the variety of topics, lexical and stylistic diversity reflects ...

The experiment was conducted on the annotated corpus of Russian short stories of the initial three decades of the 20th century, which contains 310 stories with a total of 1000000 tokens written by 300 Russian writers. The annotation scheme used in topic annotation includes 89 topics, further this list was reduced down to 30 generalized ones, the most frequent of which turned out to be the following: death, relationships, love, social groups, social processes, family, money, human sins, nature, religion, and war. Then, the corpus divided into three consecutive time periods was subjected to NMF topic modelling which provided a model including 24 topics. The results of both topic annotations were compared and described. The paper discusses the main findings of the study and the difficulties of fiction topic modelling which should be taken into account. For example, experimental results showed that topic modelling via NMF should be primarily recommended for the revealing of topics referring to general background of literary texts (e.g., war, love, nature, family) rather than for detecting topics related with some critical events or relations between characters (e.g., death or relations). The comparison of human and automatic topic annotation seems an important step for the improvement of artificial technologies techniques related with NLP.

One is field theory advanced by German linguists in the inter-war period. Here, the notions of centre and periphery, along with an array of other spatial images served to visualize the structure of lexical fields. Another tradition in the use of the terms stems from the works of the Prague linguistic circle. Czech scholars claimed that linguistic units vary in their degree of integration into the system. Well -integrated items are associated with the notion of centre while those lacking integration are characterized as peripheral. Cognitive linguistics has offered yet another perspective on the notions concerned. Drawing on Eleanor Rosch’s prototype theory, centre is associated with the category’s best example and periphery with its non-typical members. Thus, terms being the same, their implications differ significantly. It turns out that both fiel...

Methodological principles underlying the processing techniques are the same at all stages. They draw on an empirically-based theory providing for the well-groundedness and consistency of the rules and preventing any possible subjectivity. The ultimate goal of the processing is a conceptual structure made up of elements referring to extralinguistic objects and situations. The elements are assigned ontological properties and linked together by conceptual relations. This makes it possible to extract “pure” information from the text, its reliability being dependent solely on the author.
