Dr Mohammad Morad is Professor of Sociology at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh. He holds a Joint European Master’s degree in Migrations and Intercultural Relations from the University of Oldenburg (Germany), University of Stavanger (Norway) and University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia), and a PhD degree in Sociology from the University of Padova (Italy). His fields of expertise cover International Migration, Transnationalism, Social Networks, Citizenships, Diaspora, and Intra-EU Mobility. His work appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, such as The British Journal of Sociology, International Migration and Ethnic and Racial Studies. He is currently a principal investigator of the research project ‘Bangladeshi migrant workers in the Middle East and Southeast Asian Countries: Experiences during COVID-19’ (2021-22) funded by SUST Research Center, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Transnational Cross-Border Family Ties: Diasporic Lives of Bangladeshis in Italy and Beyond

The scope of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how Bangladeshi migrants in Italy ma... more The scope of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how Bangladeshi migrants in Italy maintain transnational family attachments, across multiple destinations, with the home country as well as with several host countries. The data comes from fieldwork in Northeast Italy. Research methods include in-depth interviews and participant observation. The findings reveal that a high proportion of Bangladeshi migrants maintain a variety of transnational and diasporic ties with their family and friends living in the country of origin and different European countries. These include family obligations, remittances, establishing businesses back home, visits and communication. They also preserve their national identity in this host society by maintaining cultural ways of belonging and through religious practices and involvement in Bangladeshi politics. The findings have also shown that Italian Bangladeshi families work to foster transnational family ties among the new generations born in Italy, who have little knowledge of their ancestral country. On a final note, this paper argues that transnational connections with the homeland play an important role in shaping the diasporic lives of Bangladeshis in Italy.

Political Participation of Immigrants through Voting and Representation: The Case of Norway

As immigrants are often under-represented in the political arena, in recent years, political part... more As immigrants are often under-represented in the political arena, in recent years, political participation of immigrants has become one of the most significant issues in many immigrant receiving countries in Europe. Based on secondary data, this paper has examined the political participation of immigrants in Norway through discussions of immigrants’ voting turnouts and representation in Norwegian local and national level elections. The analysis has showed that immigrants had a lower turnout and lower representation rate in both previous Norwegian local and national elections, when compared to native Norwegians. Indeed, voting turnout was significantly low in the case of non-naturalized immigrants with Asian, African, Latin American, and Eastern European backgrounds. For instance, whereas total voting turnouts were 59 percent and 61 percent respectively in the 2003 and 2007 local elections, in the case of immigrants these rates were only 25 percent and 28 percent respectively.
