About 6000 years ago, the Chinchorro people, maritime hunter-gatherers in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, began mining manganese to ornament the dead, representing the earliest form of artificial mummification in the world. We present the analysis of the bones from 68 Chinchorro mummies using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, revealing, for the first time, the presence of manganese in their bodies. We excluded the potential diagenesis by comparison of manganese concentration difference between the cemetery soils and outer coating of the mummy and by manganese source identification by SEM/EDX. Approximately 84% (57/68) of individuals have manganese concentrations beyond normal 1 ppm and 20.6% (14/68) were overexposed to levels of higher toxicity (≥ 10 ppm), with no sex differences, suggesting equal participation in manganese handling. We conclude that manganese exploitation and refining for the ritualistic treatment of the dead posed a serious occupational hazard for the living, with evidence that many of the Chinchorro people were likely involved in these activities. This is relevant, considering manganese dust inhalation produces neurological disorders and Parkinson-like symptoms. These findings open new avenues for research into the long history of anthropogenic pollution in the Americas and the importance of mineral gathering and processing as part of a broader subsistence spectrum undertaken by these ancient hunters, gatherers, and fishers.

These families, notwithstanding centuries of the imposition of the Encomienda system and mining industry, have historically occupied the rural territory from the housing/productive space of the majada, whose settlement led to a strong system of alliances predating the early historical period. The tracing of local family networks is presented here from the Almendares family registry, currently one of the groups defined as Changos or Camanchacos.

This style interprets the local pictograph representations characterized by the design of marine animals and boats made with red pigment as demonstration of physical large cetacean hunting by coastal Indigenous people from 2000 years ago until Spanish/Indigenous contact moments, a behavior supposedly witnessed by the Spanish chronicler Vázquez de Espinosa in 1618. On the contrary, a reinterpretation of this traditional model, in view of the new data obtained for the archeology of Taltal, allows us to rule out physical hunting events of large cetaceans from prehistory in this coastal area, given the null presence of material indicators that attest both, technologically and as garbage disposal. The contrast between the ethnohistoric information present for the coast of Paposo/Taltal and new data on local archeology and specifically on the iconography and materiality of the Médano pictographs open up the possibility of new interpretations of the real interaction that human groups and cetaceans had in the local landscape construction since prehistory.

Abstract Significant ethnographic information rescued by the paposins researchers Lazo and Gutiérrez (Lazo y Téllez, 1984; Gutiérrez y Lazo, 1996), allows to interpret the historical conditions that have defined the Camanchaca or Chango families of the Paposo/Taltal coast during the XVIII and XIX centuries, with the presence of the social and parental category of the "aggregates" or "relatives", subjects coming from the southern Altiplano or from other coastal groups, who were integrated into the local families from "compadrazgos" or commercial relationships (Larraín and Bugueño, 2011). The configuration of behaviors or habitus is discussed here (sensu Bourdieu, 1980), which this category of the "aggregate" would have generated among the Camanchaca or Chango families, also discussing how much of this social landscape is related to moments of contact and pre-hispanic, defining cultural continuity. To this end, such categorizations have been critically tracked between the material and oral information sources related to the Camanchaca/Chango occupation, in order to evaluate their probable causes and the way in which local and non-coastal individuals articulated themselves in the increasing exchange of charquecillo from pre-hispanic times, specialized behavior that will be marketed by the spanish crown and later by the national states.

This finding is further supported by archaeomagnetic dates on samples from the same panel, wich produced three time intervals all consistent with the AMS dates: 9132-9065 BC , 6492-6426 BC and 5203-5114 B.C. (65% confidence). Techno-economic analysis of the cave paintings suggests the Taltal area was an important Archaic settlement cluster, inhabited by different groups who were fully adapted to the coastal bioregion and who shared a common symbolic identity. The color red, produced from hematite, clays and probably local shrubs as churco, played a crucial part in the realization of animal metaphors and socially shared marine scenes as well as in the construction and interpretation of space.
