Following a brief theoretical discussion on the relationship between nationalism and language, I analyze the changing state policies toward the Kurdish language - from the early Republican period to the 2009 "Democratic Opening" initiative - and the Kurdish responses, in particular the intensification of political activism that the initiative generated. This chapter also deals with the social and political obstacles to language rights.

It examines the Ottoman legacy in the region and the Western imperial impact on the creation of the Arab state system. It then addresses rise and retreat of Arab nationalism, the problems of internal cohesion of the Arab states, issues of religion and state, and the evolution of Islamist politics. It also focuses on the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact on the region and concludes with an in depth analysis of the Arab Spring by placing these contemporary revolutionary events in their historical context. This book is the companion volume to Parts I and II of the authors' Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), The Emergence of the Modern Middle East, which was produced in collaboration with Coursera, and which has consistently been ranked among the top courses in the field of History by Class Central, the leading aggregator of MOOCs.

Kurt had been attending a funeral procession at a local cemevi (Alevi house of worship) in the Okmeydanı neighborhood in Istanbul, when the police confronted a small group of anti-government protesters nearby. A week later on May 30, Elif Çermik, a 64 year-old woman who had suffered a heart attack due to the effects of tear gas at an anti-government rally in Istanbul late December, passed away. Both Kurt and Çermik were citizens of the Alevi faith. In fact, all seven of those who have been killed since the beginning of the Gezi Park protests last summer were Alevis, which has led many to search for an explanation. One may argue that a combination of domestic and regional factors, namely Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s increasingly sectarian rhetoric and the crisis in neighboring Syria, have contributed to a greater Alevi presence in the antigovernment protests.

By juxtaposing these two periods, defined in terms of the state’s approach to the Kurds, and looking at the field of Kurdish arts as a space, practice, and discourse, it presents a more holistic picture of Kurdish responses to political turbulence in Turkey, where Kurdish cultural identity and its expression have always been an integral part of the Kurdish political struggle.
