Area 52 (G1)

Area 52 is a secret government facility from the G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Area 52, the sister facility of Area 51, is where the United States government experiment on alien lifeforms. Located in the deserts of New Mexico, Area 52 stretches at least 600 feet underground, and the lower levels are so top-secret not even G.I. Joe knows about them.

Following the defeat of the Decepticons on Earth, human scientists brought the bodies of Megatron and Soundwave to Area 52. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers #6

A few years later, Area 52 became the temporary base of G.I. Joe, and now contained a warp gate to Cybertron. At the top-secret level 12, scientists including Doctor Li, Professor Martin and Doctor Wise had managed to create the Serpent Organic Robot using Decepticon technology. Unfortunately, Wise was actually a Cobra spy, and Area 52 came under attack from Battle Android Troopers when Cobra Commander decided he wanted Serpent O.R. on his side. While G.I. Joe scrambled to defend the facility, Cobra Commander and Zartan infiltrated the lower levels on a Buzz Boar and freed Serpent O.R. The Art of War #1

Serpent O.R. did heavy damage to the area whilst fighting his way out, and made sure to break the warp gate after using it to go to Cybertron. The Art of War #2 Li and Martin managed to salvage it, allowing a team of Joes and Autobots to follow Serpent O.R. The Art of War #3 All of G.I. Joe's available forces later gathered at Area 52 in order to use the warp gate as well. The Art of War #4
