G.I. Joe is the code-name for America's daring, highly trained special mission force! Its purpose: to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world!
It has been known to ally itself with the Autobots, just as Cobra tends to ally with the Decepticons.
The team is named after their founder and executive officer, Joe Colton.

Marvel The Transformers comics

G.I. Joe was assigned to protect Power Station Alpha, the world's first mobile solar/nuclear power station. As they blockaded the plant from Cobra and hippies, the Decepticons struck, Bombshell implanting a cerebro-shell on Anthony Duranti to have him distract the Autobots. The ruse worked and Bumblebee rushed into action to save the boy. Caught off-guard by the Autobot, G.I. Joe opened fire on him, blowing him to pieces. A furious Superion then arrived Blood on the Tracks whom G.I. Joe quickly came to (futile) blows with before the combiner was called away. After Station Alpha flew away, the Joes gave chase, engaging their foes in an aerial battle before Cobra attacked a nearby passenger ship, forcing the Joes to save the civilians. Power Struggle
One of the rescued, industrialist G.B. Blackrock told the Joes about the true nature of the Autobots and Decepticons and what fools they'd been for attacking Bumblebee before he got to work fixing him. The Joes later sent a force to the Ark, Ashes, Ashes... arriving in time to cower inside the ship when the Decepticon/Cobra alliance attacked with Station Alpha before the Decepticons decided that that their alliance had served its purpose. Along with Cobra and the Autobots, the Joes destroyed Station Alpha. After the villains fled, Blaster told G.I. Joe to go away and not bother the Autobots. ...All Fall Down!
Members involved in this mission included Ace, Beachhead, Crankcase, Dial-Tone, General Hawk, Lady Jaye, Lift-Ticket, Mainframe, Mutt & Junkyard, Roadblock, Scarlett, Sgt. Slaughter, Slip-Stream, Snake-Eyes, and Wild Bill.
Marvel Generation 2 comic
After incidents in previous issues of G. I. Joe led Megatron to believe that there was another Cybertronian on the planet, he flew to investigate and wound up confronting Cobra; in the aftermath, he bargained with Cobra for a new body in exchange for a quantity of Cybertronian technology. Megatron joined with Cobra when they retreated to their new headquarters, a small town under Cobra's control, but his refusal to remain in tank mode blew their cover as the G.I. Joe team spotted his movements and reported them back to Optimus Prime, who dispatched a rather mismatched team of Autobots to assist the Joes in their efforts against Cobra. In a rather costly series of skirmishes, the Joe team and the Autobots liberated the town, rescued a scientist who Megatron took hostage, recovered a Joe who had gone undercover, and prevented Cobra from obtaining the promised technology. Unfortunately, Megatron escaped, leaving the Joe team and a lone Autobot left to guard the planet against Megatron's next moves. Unfoldings! Realignments Goin' South Sucker Punch Final Transformations All or Nothing!
Members involved in this mission included Flint, General Hawk, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, and Wild Bill.
Later, the Decepticons launched an all-out assault on the Earth. With Washington, D.C. turned into a smouldering ruin, the task of salvaging the United States military's counter-offensive fell to Hawk and G.I. Joe. They were not optimistic about how it was going. The Gathering Darkness
Known members involved were Hawk and Flint, but we can assume others were as well.
Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity
G.I. Joe was formed in the early 1990s to combat the rising threat of Cobra. When a 1996 mission went sour, Joe member D.R. Faireborn and his daughter Marissa were saved by Optimus Prime, beginning an odd "relationship" between Prime and Marissa that persisted for years. 2007 TakaraTomy Transformers timeline
Transformers/G.I. Joe
In 1938, Europe was overrun by the combined forces of the Decepticons and Cobra. G.I. Joe was formed to combat them and were led to their Terrordrome in the Fera Islands by a map carved out of the USS Hama's hull by treacherous Cobra operatives. While engaging Cobra troops commanded by Storm Shadow, the Joes encountered the Autobots, who soon repaired and revived themselves. The Joes soon found themselves under fire from a squadron of Rattlers and Seekers led by Wild Weasel, but these were driven back by Lady Jaye and the Aerialbots.
While the Cobra aircraft were driven off, they left behind paratroopers and Rumble. The Joes managed to defeat the troops, and Bumblebee and Scarlett destroyed Rumble, but Zartan managed to murder and replace Breaker in the confusion. He was quickly discovered, but not before he allowed Soundwave to capture Flint.
Storm Shadow left the main Cobra force to engage in a deadly duel with his sword-brother Snake-Eyes, now a member of G.I. Joe. Despite the intervention of Ravage, Snake-Eyes defeated Storm Shadow, who was then eaten by a shark.
Soon, Cobra prepared to defend the town of Torhavn against the approaching Autobots and Joes, using slaves as human shields. Another Cobra air attack was foiled by Lady Jaye and Superion; soon afterwards, Lady Jaye defeated Major Bludd and the Dreadnoks. Meanwhile, a small Joe strike force infiltrated the Terrordrome, destroying Frenzy in the process.
As the Joes, Autobots, and an Allied fleet neared, Shockwave destroyed Superion and a number of ships, damaging himself severely in the process. But despite heavy losses, the Autobots soldiered on.
Destro and the Baroness took advantage of the chaos to unleash their monstrous creation Bruticus upon both sides—but not before slaying their co-conspirator, Starscream. Bruticus' attack crippled Cobra Commander, allowing the Baroness to execute him with Megatron's pistol form. Her victory was short-lived—before the Commander's body could cool, she and Destro were arrested by Scarlett and Snake-Eyes. As the metal monster tore through the Autobots, Snake-Eyes took the Matrix from the Commander's corpse and destroyed it, killing the Autobots, Decepticons, and Bruticus and ending the threat of Cobra.
Members involved in this mission included Beachhead, Breaker, Duke, Flint, Grunt, Lady Jaye, Leatherneck, Lifeline, Roadblock, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, and Stalker.
Some 45 years after the conquest of Europe, Cobra rose again, and G.I. Joe returned to combat it. Headquartered in the Pit, G.I. Joe was led by Duke, a veteran of the last Cobra war. In 1985, a G.I. Joe team led by Flint attacked a Cobra shipping facility. While the facility was largely destroyed, Destro and Scrap-Iron managed to escape via Trouble Bubble, an act that led to Flint being reprimanded. Soon afterwards, the Joes detected the crash of an Autobot shuttlecraft near Portland. Flint was sent to retrieve it with a team of rookies, and he managed to repel a Cobra strike team and recover an unconscious Blaster. Hours later, the team was briefed by Duke, Stalker, and Scarlett on the threat posed by the Transformers.
Members involved in this mission included Airtight, Alpine, Barbecue, Bazooka, Blowtorch, Clutch, Cover Girl, Doc, Duke, Flint, Grand Slam, Gung-Ho, Mutt & Junkyard, Quick Kick, Rock 'n Roll, Scarlett, Shipwreck, Snake-Eyes, Spirit, Stalker, and Wild Bill.
G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers
After Cobra discovered the Ark and turned the Transformers within it into remote-controlled war machines, the G.I. Joe team was formed to oppose them. (The team was modelled on a 1970s group, the Adventure Team)

Two years later, an attempt by Cobra to seize control of Teletran 3 resulted in several Transformers being sent to various eras in Earth's history, threatening to alter the timestream catastrophically. Cobra and G.I.Joe were forced to work together to neutralize the threat. During this period, an America-Cybertron technology exchange meant the Joes briefly had awesome battle mechas.
Members involved in this mission included Barbecue, Bazooka, Beachhead, Chuckles, Cover Girl, Dial-Tone, Dusty, Duke, Gung-Ho, Jinx, Lady Jaye, Roadblock, Stalker, Scarlett, Shipwreck, Snake-Eyes, and Spirit.

Transformers vs. G.I. Joe
The group known as G.I. Joe was the latest incarnation of a society that knew Earth was in fact a Transformer deity known as Atlas, though this secret was known only to the higher echelons of command. The War Never Ends
In the 20th century, G.I. Joe had become involved in a war with the terrorist group known as Cobra. On a mission to Koh-Buru-Lah to destroy Cobra's creeper bombs, the Joes ran afoul of Starscream and Bumblebee. Though the mission ended in the seeming demise of Cobra Commander, it came at the cost of leaving Snake-Eyes with horrible facial injuries. The Golden Boys As the Joes advanced on the seemingly fractured Cobra, the rogue planet of Cybertron entered the solar system, with the Joes deducing that the mechanical giants they'd seen earlier were examples of Cybertronian life. Though General Flagg and Hawk rolled out the welcome mat at Area Zero, they also sent Scarlett in the Defiant to stage an invasion of Cybertron should the aliens prove hostile. Things turned hostile when Snake-Eyes, eager for revenge on Starscream, attacked the first contact meeting. When the Joes turned the Coltonbolt on the aliens, Soundwave perished while the others fled to Cobra to lick their wounds and Hawk ordered Scarlett to invade Cybertron. I Saw Three Ships
The Defiant began a bombing campaign on Cybertron, one hindered by their lack of knowledge of tactical targets, before their invasion force was defeated by the Decepticons. While some Joes were captured by the Decepticons and later the Autobots, the free Joes fled to the terraformed Iacon where they captured a curious Wheeljack. Targetmasters Eventually though, both Joes and Autobots came to an understanding and agreed to work together against the Decepticon/Cobra alliance. Form Follows Function
The alliance was tested soon thereafter when Megatron attacked Iacon with his massive army. Though many Joes were taken prisoner, some managed to escape, with those entrapped feeling that they'd given a good account of themselves. Everybody Hates Metroplex Back on Earth, Flagg tried to convince the Jugglers to allow a nuclear strike on Cybertron. Not only was his request denied, but the Jugglers shut down G.I. Joe and replaced them with GIJONIN. Not taking this lying down, Flagg executed the Jugglers and launched a one-man coup. Expelled from the Garden Inexplicably successful in his hostile takeover, the reinstated Joes were dispatched to arrest the rogue general only for him to convince his would be captors to follow him to Cybertron. When Megatron ordered Cybertron to collide with Earth, the Joes believed themselves the last of the human race. Pax Megatronus
The Joes retreated to an underground bunker where Perceptor brought them Tunnel Rat and Roadblock, the three of them having figured out how to deactivate Trypticon's force field. Earth: R.I.P. Megatron's endgame was soon revealed when he had Cybertron transform into its robot mode, the warrior god Primus, and have the deity devour the Sun. Escape from Primus
Though the Jotobot alliance fought well, the Decepticons again proved too strong. Transformers vs. G.I. Joe #12 Salvation then came from the most unexpected of places, Earth, the planet having survived its collision with Cybertron with but a gouge. Emboldened, the Jotobot alliance defeated the Decepticons, and reclaimed the Matrix of Leadership, but could not reason with the energy starved Primus who kept consuming the Sun. Salvation again came from the Earth, transformed into Atlas, who punched his brother away from the Sun. In the aftermath of "Space War I", the Joes went their separate ways but remained ever vigilant of threat to the newfound peace. The War Never Ends
Beast Wars: Uprising
G.I. Joe's Star Brigade was reorganized into the Earth Defense Command in the year 2003. Micro-Aggressions Roughly around this time, G.I. Joe defeated Cobra only for the controversial Operation Staple Gun to see the recruitment of 731 Cobra scientists, engineers, and technicians by the United States government to combat the increasingly dangerous Transformers. The Inexorable March
2005 IDW continuity
G.I. Joe began as Special Counter-Terrorist Group Delta, a team of military operatives formed to succeed Joe Colton's Adventure Force in 2006. Revolutionaries #1 timeline Secret Raiders Adventure Force veteran Stalker was transferred into the team at the time of its formation. In the years before the Autobot/Decepticon war reached Earth in full, G.I. Joe encountered a lone mechanical alien roaming Oregon. With the help of Sgt. Savage and Centurion, the team succeeded in incapacitating the rogue Decepticon. They were unprepared to learn that Colton and Centurion had partnered with Garrison Kreiger and Joshua Red's Skywatch unit as part of a larger initiative involving a mysterious artifact. The Joes were left out of the loop, unaware that Colton was running several morally dubious side bets of his own, due to Skywatch's strictly compartmentalized approach to classified information. When Eagles Scream
The team's early exploits, as well as those of the Adventure Team's, were classified shortly afterward and not disclosed to new recruits, though rumors continually swirled that "weird things" had gone down in the early 2000s. Power and Glory
In 2008, G.I. Joe would go on to fight the secret society Cobra soon after the full-scale Decepticon invasion of Earth. Revolutionaries #1 timeline Secret Raiders After the Decepticon invasion, there was a panicked decision to tell everyone that G.I. Joe's members were all dead and if you wanted it, you had to let your family believe you were dead too. Dance Among the Shadows
The war between Cobra and G.I. Joe escalated constantly, even as the Joes suffered budget cuts that stopped them from even sending a rescue/arrest mission to an abandoned Cobra moonbase. Enter the Shadow The conflict reached its peak when Cobra nuked Nanzhao, a destructive act second only to the Decepticon invasion in all of Earth history. G.I. Joe was both public and distrusted by the public after that. Revolutionaries #1 timeline Secret Raiders They tried to carry on and had a big public expansion, with local groups set up and the Admin Force being sent out to schools to say HEY KIDS SAY NO TO COBRA! Nothing Will Ever Be the Same Again!
In 2014, G.I. Joe members Big Ben and Duke would go on to work with Isaac Craft in a plan to bring Cobra down from within. They succeeded, but Craft's death meant that they were unaware that operative Snake-Eyes had become a deep cover agent within the Cobra ranks at the time. The Iron Klaw Revolutionaries #1 timeline Secret Raiders The war between Galibi and Schleteva was their final outing Crisis Intervention before the shutdown and the return of the Transformers. Secret Raiders
By that point, most of Admin Force had quit anyway. MP3 made a lonely patrol of Texas, waiting to be called back to action. Nothing Will Ever Be the Same Again!
When Optimus Prime annexed the Earth as a protectorate, former Joe Scarlett met with Joe Colton and Miles Manheim to discuss the issue. Secret Raiders
After the Earth Defense Command failed to meet expectations under Marissa Faireborn's leadership, Colton was placed in command. He brought in old members of G.I. Joe into the EDC (which would have been great were he not secretly a Dire Wraith), White Light before he resurrected G.I. Joe specifically to fight off the Cybertronians. Concorde Hymn Spike Witwicky and China's Zilong Qian were moved to the Joes as Spike (yeah) and Talon, respectively, with Zilong looking extremely favorably on aggressively beating up aliens. White Heat G.I. Joe made use of EDC technology and designs in their weapons which they used in fighting Optimus Prime's troops in Portland. Optimus was unimpressed with their weapons and lack of rationality viewing them as inferior to the EDC personnel he'd encountered in the past. Out of nowhere, a silver alien showed up, killed four Joes, including Colton, and flew off. Concorde Hymn After cleaning in Portland, Scarlett went to check on, and solidify, G.I. Joe's alliance with M.A.S.K.. The Divine Source of Liberty Doc brought the news that the four Joes killed by the silver alien had non-human DNA prompting Scarlett to wonder if the whole chain of command was compromised. O Ship of State
When she was called into the Oval Office, Marissa Faireborn defended her actions to the President by pointing out the recent strings of failures suffered by G.I. Joe when it came to dealing with aliens. While this happened Scarlett waged an all-out attack on the EDC's Bikini Atoll base: she'd become suspicious that the base had gone too quiet and had been overrun by Dire Wraiths. Thundercracker & Buster Save the World D.T.A. Valuable technology, meaning the captive Skywarp, had to be retrieved. To the horror of the Joes, it turned out Wild Bill was also a Wraith! Killing something with their friend's face left them shaken. This did at least confirm all people on the island were aliens and should be gunned down... leading to Rock 'n Roll, who'd already killed "Bill", shooting the Joe Grand Slam who was not a Wraith. Rock was left disgusted to find he'd gunned down a comrade rescuing a Decepticon. D.T.A. While they were out, the G.I. Goose got what was good for the gander as Action Man broke into the Joe base at Governor's Island, freeing Kup and leaving the base in chaos. This inadvertently prompted Miles Mayhem to step up his timetable. The Modern World
When Scarlett's team returned from the mission, they found the base in shambles and all the M.A.S.K. gear taken while Snake Eyes was broadcasting a distress signal from Autobot City. Unable to assist due to the Cybertronians easily being able to override their technology, Scarlett was ready to throw in the towel before Mainframe revealed all the classic gear that was too low tech for Soundwave to hack. The New Colossus They arrived during an all-out brawl to help turn the tide against the alien warlord Baron Karza, revealed to be the architect behind the crisis, and Mainframe was part of a team of cross-factional smarties who helped broadcast a counter-frequency to stop Ore-13 detonating. Victory was assured and Mainframe survived after being sheltered by the Decepticon Soundwave. Valley Forge
In the middle of all this, MP3 and his Action Van finally got their shot at a real mission when a robotic dinosaur stomped across Texas. In the end, talking with the Scavengers, he finally handed in his resignation... which he very soon regretted when the Scavengers blasted off without him. Nothing Will Ever Be the Same Again!
After this, G.I. Joe severed their ties with the American government Valley Forge and became an international team operating with a UN charter to handle alien incidents. Zilong Qian remained suspicious that at heart, the agency was just an American group with some token foreigners. A Lonely Pillar on the Plain Various old members like Ayana Jones returned to the Joes, alongside new members like Quarrel and Sanjay Bharwaney, the new Hi-Tech. Crisis Intervention A Lonely Pillar on the Plain An abandoned Decepticon spaceship on the sea bed was turned into their swanky new HQ, Lemuria, and Skywarp ended up drafted into the new Joes. Poor Grand Slam remained with the team but crippled after Rock 'n Roll's 'friendly fire'. They did not get on. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #1
Early missions would see the Joes with Skywarp in Tokyo, taking out the Red Shadows, and investigating anarchist uprisings in Greece. Multiple issues happened at once as China called them up to stop Crystal Ball ramping up insurgents in Inner Mongolia G.I. Joe vol. 5 #1 while the inhabitants of Verenya, Shleteva were transformed into Dire Wraiths by an energy wave. Ayana "Mayday" Jones led her first command to Verenya, running into both Rom, Action Man and Kup, Garrison Blackrock, and the Oktober Guard all with clashing attempts to get the obelisk that caused the wave. It turned out that the civilians could potentially be cured but Jones was left as the only Joe after her team was transformed. Crisis Intervention She continued to operate the ragtag bunch of spies and robots she'd met instead of calling in further Joes, Enter the Shadow though she recruited Snake-Eyes for an infiltration mission. The Iron Klaw
The Junkions landed at the Alps, where Zilong Qian had to struggle to get them and the Autobots to acknowledge Joe sovereignty over these matters and the spy on them as they chatted. Zilong had difficulties managing his team, being both an outsider and not American, and ex-Cobra Chameleon tried to talk him into opening up more. To give the team an edge, Zilong reluctantly authorized Spike's plan of calling in Thundercracker to consult; the 'bot agreed as long as Marissa Faireborn was offered a job in the Joes but she refused. Thundercracker's aid was boosted by Soundwave's, to everyone's surprise, and Mainframe re-bonded with his old ally. The Joes were thus able to tell the Junkion ship had a huge number of troops in it A Lonely Pillar on the Plain Behind My Bleeding Back and when Soundwave quietly left, Zilong was able to tell he'd been operating without Prime's knowledge and there was a potential wedge there.
An agreement was struck with the Autobots for G.I. Joe to bring foreign leaders to the Alps (which was already clogged with foreign military observers) and discuss a trade deal with the Junkions. That went badly when the Junkions unleashed thousands of Sharkticons on the assembled masses. Dance Among the Shadows Though the Joes were quick to counterattack, their weapons proved ineffective against the Sharkticons, the invaders only standing down when Soundwave quoted Megatron's writings to them, emancipating them and causing them to turn on their masters. Future Glories Lost When Optimus Prime later made peace with the Junkions, G.I. Joe oversaw the construction of Little Cybertron. Feel Safe Without Regrets The Next Day, and the Next
Not long afterward, when Mayday's Revolutionaries had taken custody of Garrison Kreiger, G.I. Joe was called to collect him from the Onyx facility from Buenos Aires only to be ambushed by the Iron Ring with Sgt. Savage unmasking their leader as Joe Colton. When Eagles Scream Despite being backed up by Optimus Prime and Metrotitan, G.I. Joe failed to stop the Iron Ring from retaking Kreiger and escaping, though the Titan was able to cure the Dire Wraith mutates. Ghost in the Machine
While this was happening, Jazz had signed on to do an interview on Mexican TV. The interviewer, Hector Ramirez, merely wanted a public confession for the killing of John Powell and had already called G.I. Joe to arrest the Autobot. Optimus Prime had deduced this information from talking with the President of the United States and sent Jazz a warning, who fled before G.I. Joe arrived. What It's Really Like
When Marissa Faireborn was sworn in as Earth's ambassador to the Council of Worlds, a G.I. Joe delegation served as her bodyguards while a Bridge Layer kept her at optic level with her fellow politicians. Unification Day: Dawn Primeless, Part 1 The Joes back on Earth were watching the ceremony before the Iron Ring attacked. When Marissa's team tried to get her back to the space bridge, Starscream ordered it shut down, trapping the Joes on Cybertron. First Strike #1 Scarlett's team managed to fuse space bridge hardware with the M.A.S.S. Device allowing them, along with M.A.S.K., to teleport into Iacon. First Strike #3
When Unicron began its attack on the Cybertronian colonies, it was aided by Shockwave's embittered army of Maximals who attacked the Lemuria before they were defeated. Last Stand Concurrently, Jazz surrendered himself to G.I. Joe in exchange for Rom being allowed to use Trypticon's space bridge. Unstopped and Unstoppable Furious at this turn of events, the Dinobots began petitioning for their friend's release only for them to come to blows with the well-meaning but overeager Colonist Soldiers. Hearing this in his cell, Jazz casually walked out and defused the situation before the Chaos Bringer arrived over Earth to complete its agenda of extinction. Time Will Rust
Along with many other heroes and villains of Earth, G.I. Joe convened in Trypticon to discuss the threat. When the Maximals swarmed towards Metroplex to try and claim the Talisman, they were met by a G.I. Joe air force whom they promptly turned into scrap metal before continuing forwards. Assembly Another Joe force helped Prowl capture Shockwave in Toronto. Ceremony After Unicron was felled, several Joe representatives were present at Optimus Prime's funeral. Post

At first, Duke turned down the position, but changed his mind when Hawk informed him that there were other transforming robots running around, and he vowed to destroy them all. Duke #5
Duke's first choice for the unit was – oddly enough – the Baroness, which Hawk wasn't sure of, but Duke pointed out that if they didn't make use of her talents, someone else would.

Notes
- The original Marvel G.I. Joe and the Transformers crossover storyline was not printed in the UK at the time that the Generation 1 comic was referencing it. So in the UK Generation 1 reprints, lines of dialogue were changed, and different circumstances were concocted for Bumblebee to be destroyed and rebuilt as Goldbug. Years later, G.I. Joe and the Transformers WAS finally reprinted, but no effort was made to work it back into continuity.
- Presumably, Japanese Generation 1's date for the founding of G.I. Joe was meant to reference the Japanese dub of the G.I. Joe cartoon, which set its events in the early '90s rather than the '80s. This placement of the creation of the group after the Transformers awoke on Earth does help to explain where Cobra and the Joes got all those lasers!
- Before Revolution, IDW's Joe comics were not meant to be in continuity with Transformers. To get around this, "Revolution Prelude" claimed that the bulk of G.I. Joe's exploits had happened after the events of All Hail Megatron. Surprisingly, this is actually more-or-less plausible.
