Color Changer

This article is about the Generation 2 subgroup. For other instances of color changing, see color change (disambiguation). |
- The Color Changers are a subgroup from the Generation 1 continuity family.
The Color Changers are four Transformers with the ability to change colors. Exactly what purpose this serves in combat is unclear—perhaps it is used for camouflage akin to a chameleon. This ability is somewhat limited, as the Color Changers have to be in contact with water in order to make use of it, but luckily, they're all equipped with water cannons so that they can camouflage each other on either side...wait...

- Known designers: Andy Couzens (Hasbro), Takio Ejima (TakaraTomy), Masakatsu Saito (concept artist)
- The Color Changers are redecos of the Europe-exclusive Aquaspeeder toys and share their main gimmick: Parts of the toys are painted with color changing paint that reacts to water of different temperatures. To make use of this feature, the Color Changers all came with water guns to shoot at one another (or themselves).
Notes
- Although the Color Changers are redecoed from the European Aquaspeeders, their names and bios are randomly cobbled together from both their teammates and the Stormtroopers (and even the name of a previously competing franchise, the trademark for which Hasbro had recently acquired with the purchase of former rival Tonka):
- The redeco of Aquaspeeder Aquafend was given the name of his fellow Aquaspeeder Jetstorm, the bio of Stormtrooper Drench and a completely new motto.
- The redeco of Aquaspeeder Deluge was given the name of Stormtrooper Drench, and the bio and motto of his fellow Aquaspeeder Jetstorm.
- The redeco of Aquaspeeder Jetstorm was given the name of the Tonka GoBots, and the bio and motto of his fellow Aquaspeeder Deluge.
- The redeco of Aquaspeeder Speedstream was given the name of his fellow Aquaspeeder Deluge, and the bio and motto of Stormtrooper Hydradread.
- Despite being the core appeal of the figures, the actual gimmick of the Color Changers is heavily succeptible to age. The plastic WILL eventually lose its ability to change color, as most examples of them would already have done by present day.
- Though the Color Changers were never released in Japan, each did gain a Japanese name via a BotCon Japan 1997 exclusive poster, which featured bios for all of the new Generation 2 characters released in the U.S. who weren't part of the Japanese line: the Axelerators, the Skyscorchers, Rotor Force, four of the Go-Bots, and the Color Changers.
