2005 IDW continuity

In 1984, Bludgeon and his team of Decepticons established a base inside Mount St. Helens during their attempts to gather Ultra-Energon for Thunderwing's revival. When they were done, Bludgeon tried to erase the evidence (and Soundwave) by tossing a plasma-density charge into the volcano's molten lava, triggering an eruption which destroyed the base. One year later, the human organization Skywatch excavated the mountain and found several Cybertronians: Soundwave's deactivated minions, Laserbeak and Ravage, Spotlight: Soundwave as well as Bludgeon's teammate Bugly. When Eagles Scream

Over the years, Skywatch excavated and refurbished the majority of the base as part of "Project: Hot House:" turning it into a highly classified research laboratory where Joe Colton and Garrison Kreiger ran tests on the supplies of Ore-13 within, combining their energy with an alien obelisk unearthed by the Adventure Team some years before in an attempt to create an anti-Cybertronian superweapon. After Bugly broke containment, G.I. Joe was called in to subdue the runaway alien, attracting the attention of Sgt. Savage, who was soon lured into the base under false pretenses and used as a guinea pig for Colton's increasingly cruel experiments. The base was evidently abandoned sometime afterwards. When Eagles Scream

Many years later, after Laserbeak and Ravage were freed from Skywatch's control, they brought the weakened Soundwave to Mount St. Helens. Upon arrival, they found that Shockwave had been waiting for them so that he could strike a deal with Soundwave. Maximum Dinobots #4

Notes

  • In reality, the eruption of Mount St. Helens happened in 1980, and served as inspiration for the fictional Mount St. Hilary, where the Ark crashed in many Generation 1 stories. Exceptions are the Japanese "Beast Wars Universe" guidebook, which claims that the Ark crashed in Mount St. Helens, and a European 1991 catalog with a story page that also uses Mount St. Helens instead of Mount St. Hilary. However, Mount St. Helens did not exist four million years ago as it is only about 40,000 years old. Mind you, the same European story page also claims the Transformers' story began four billion (!) years ago, and it was an Autobot "rocket" crashed because of a malfunction, so...
  • It was confirmed by Bob Budiansky that the Ark was originally planned to crash into Mount St. Helens rather than Mount St. Hilary.[1]
  • While Spotlight: Soundwave says that Mount St. Helens is "near the region known as Oregon", Maximum Dinobots incorrectly claims that it's in Oregon. Though only two hours from Portland, the volcano is well across the state line in Washington.
