The topic is approached through a group of location-independent travellers, the so called global nomads who illustrate the complex subjectivities and power relations associated with sustained mobility.
The research makes use of three research areas—studies on tourism, lifestyle migration, and new mobilities—as well as Foucauldian theories on power and subjectivity.

This study examines a group of long-term travellers, the ‘global nomads’, who avoid the tourism industry by making long-term lifestyle changes, engaging in voluntary simplicity and non-monetary exchange. They seek authenticity by interacting with locals, representing an increasing trend. More conventional tourists also seek similar experiences, posing challenges to the tourism industry. Analysed with Foucauldian theories, global nomads' market resistance is shown to be contradictory as it also reinforces the market. However, even if partial, global nomads' resistance reminds us that tourism is not just an industry. It is also negotiated between private individuals, with or without intermediaries, which calls for rethinking of the concept of ‘tourism’.

The sharing economy is believed to radically change consumer behaviour and disrupt business-as-usual, but does it really employ new business models? This article examines sharing economy business models by identifying customer engagement, monetisation and value links that reveal similarities and differences between the so-called ‘new’ and the ‘old’ economy. The focus is on tourism, which is one of the prime
markets for peer-to-peer services.

While segmentation aims to support the firm's overall value proposition, it may also constrain aims to be more customer-centric. In the analysis, the focus is on subtle and often invisible forms of micro-power that are practised through everyday business actions. Although the study is conceptual, it is practice-oriented, providing managers with a checklist of questions that can be used for assessing the firm's power relations. Transparency, value co-creation, individualised segmentation, and empathy are suggested for redressing unfavourable power differentials, and for building long-term customer relationships.

The focus is on power negotiations regarding freedom of movement and the limits of modern-day mobilities. The study is based on in-depth interviews, instant ethnography and virtual ethnography analysed with Foucauldian discourse analysis. Two discourses are examined—the discourse of home and hearth and the discourse of homelessness—that reveal contradictions in society and in global nomads’ lifestyles. While societies tend to be suspicious about sustained mobilities, mostly promoting homebound travel, global nomads are not able to detach themselves from home either. They are opportunists taking advantage of societies’ dominant discourses and practices.
