— This paper presents an innovative framework concept combined with online labs for teaching and learning of engineering subjects. The concept integrates comprehensive approaches of different classical and innovative aspects. The paper gives an overview of current state-of-art technologies in remote and virtual labs and some existing activities for transnational online experimentation frameworks. New comprehensive teaching and learning concept for robotics and smart devices is presented together with practical results. The implemented remote lab portal-DistanceLab is presented in detail focusing on three different remote labs: Virtual microcontroller lab, Smart greenhouse lab, and Mobile robot lab.

The paper presents new concept based on ICT to raise the level of education in mechatronics in second and third educational schools and also in vocational education. Based on a modern set of e-learning tools (e.g. Distance Lab, Home Lab Kit and Center of Excellence) and concept, educational process can be made significantly more attractive for students and pupils and better accessible for continuing education.

In this paper a SysML navigation models and early design methodology is briefly introduced. The methodology is offering tool and pre-defined models for mobile robot design in early design stage. The main target is reaching the optimal and efficient conceptual solution for detail design stage by using the pre-defined and validated SysML models according to the robot purpose and missions. As an example a snow plowing mission is demonstrated. Real mobile robot platform called “UKU” is developed and used for model validation purpose.

ABSTRACT The early design is an important but often underestimated design stage of a new product development process. Engineering decisions at different design stages affect the final product without any doubt. However, decisions made at an early design stage affect the result much more than later ones. The objective of the research is to provide comprehensive framework, supported by the appropriate tools and techniques for system engineering and mobile robot platforms. The framework applies novel technique - SysML as a technical language of creating models as well as simulation scenarios. Mobile Robot Toolkit profile is developed based on SysML, which is intended to provide pre-defined models and simulation cases to help designers to compare design candidates more effectively and find out optimal solution in minimum time with maximum help of computational tools. A case study, presenting examples of applying toolkit models for performance evaluation is introduced in the end of paper.
