Until very recently, the Old French romance Méliacin by Girart d'Amiens was known by five manuscripts. The unexpected discovery of a new fragment containing fourty-two truncated verses of the romance contribue to enlight its early reception. The oriental origin of the tale (love story with a flying horse), and the special conditions of the romance's composition (a literary contest) make Méliacin and its twin Cléomadès unique in the medieval French literature. Cléomadès eventually supplants Méliacin at the end of the Middle Ages, but the new fragment confirms that, in the decades after they were written, the two romances of le cheval de fust were similarly distributed. Indeed, examination of the text and the script suggests that the fragment dates from the late thirteenth century and has some common features with the first three manuscripts, copied in Paris in late 1285 or early 1286 (manuscripts A, B and C). The article presents the discovery and give facsimile and transcription of the text. Then it offers a brief comparison with three manuscripts, two from the thirteenth century and one from the fourteenth century. In the fragment, textual and graphical variants prove to be very few, and we can suppose that the manuscript was based on a similar pattern as that of manuscripts A and B.
