Bird species are dramatically longer-lived than similar-sized mammals, in spite of two traits--high metabolic rate and elevated blood glucose--which some modern theories of aging suggest should be associated with accelerated senescence. As a consequence of their longevity, birds may possess specialized protective mechanisms against free radical and Maillard reaction damage, and may offer insight into medical interventions for retarding aging. In this review we have highlighted a number of bird species which are commercially available, easily maintained, and more thoroughly characterized with respect to basic physiology than many biogerontologists realize. There seem to us to be few intrinsic barriers to the development of several avian "mice"--extensively characterized species exhibiting exceptionally long life and retarded aging--and for these to become readily accessible as a laboratory resource for the gerontological research community.

ABSTRACT A recent study of seasonal influences on energetics in the southern flying squirrel, Glaucomys volans (Stapp, 1992, Journal of Mammalogy, 73:914-920), compares metabolic and life-history variables in gliding and nongliding arboreal sciurids and interprets them largely in the context of thermoregulatory constraints. We consider an alternative explanation for the “K-selected” traits of flying squirrels from evolutionary senescence theory and the comparative life-history literature. Comparative analyses reveal convincing evidence for the impact of mortality patterns on life histories of mammals and for gliding and flying as adaptations promoting the evolution of longevity.

As 2020 is “The Year of the Rat” in the Chinese astrological calendar, it seems an appropriate time to consider whether we should bring back the laboratory rat to front-and-center in research on the basic biology of mammalian aging. Beginning in the 1970s, aging research with rats became common, peaking in 1992 but then declined dramatically by 2018 as the mouse became preeminent. The purpose of this review is to highlight some of the historical contributions as well as current advantages of the rat as a mammalian model of human aging, because we suspect at least a generation of researchers is no longer aware of this history or these advantages. We generated a genetically heterogenous rat model by a 4-way cross strategy using 4 inbred strains (Brown Norway [BN], Fischer 344 [F344], Lewis [LEW], and Wistar Kyoto [KY]) to provide investigators with a highly genetically diverse rat model from commercially available inbred rats. We made reciprocal crosses between males and females from the 2 F1 hybrids to generate genetically heterogeneous rats with mitochondrial genomes from either the BN (OKC-HETB, a.k.a “B” genotype) or WKY (OKC-HETW a.k.a “W” genotype) parental strains. These two mitochondrial genomes differ at 94 nucleotides, more akin to human mitochondrial genome diversity than that available in classical laboratory mouse strains. Comparing biological processes in closely related species with divergent life spans is a powerful approach to study mechanisms of aging. The oxidative stress hypothesis of aging predicts that longer-lived species would have lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and/or an increased antioxidant capacity, resulting in reduced oxidative damage with age than in shorter-lived species. In this study, we measured ROS generation in the young adult animals of the long-lived white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (maximal life span potential, MLSP = 8 yr) and the common laboratory mouse, Mus musculus (C57BL/6J strain; MLSP = 3.5 yr). Consistent with the hypothesis, our results show that skeletal muscle mitochondria from adult P. leucopus produce less ROS (superoxide and hydrogen peroxide) compared with M. musculus.
